Cash pinched the bridge of his nose and swore. “So, Davenport thinks Vanessa rifled his room and stole something.”

“Yes, however?—”

“Oh God. Why do I think you’re going to tell me something even worse?”

Dominick looked chagrinned. He arched a brow. “Mr. Davenport’s room wasn’t locked properly. The lock is apparently broken.”

“For fuck’s sake. Do we have any idea when that happened?” Cash wanted to throttle someone. A broken lock was a stupid minor detail that should be taken care of immediately. It shouldn’t be up to him to make that happen. These were minor domestic things. He was supposed to wrangle the monsters and make sure they didn’t do anything to anyone who didn’t want it done to them. A fucking door lock? Not his job. Except Davenport was here for some big ass important meeting that no one wanted to give him any details about.

“I’m sorry, sir, but that room has been unoccupied for over a month.”

Cash blew out a breath. “So, what you’re telling me is, it could all be innocent. It could’ve been broken for ages, and no one complained about it or it could’ve happened today when someone else searched Davenport’s room or Vanessa could’ve broken it herself to get into the room in the first place.”

“Yes, sir,” Dominick agreed.

The front door opened and Archer Gray walked in. He was wearing a pair of black dress pants, a pinstriped dark grey blazer with a camel colored overcoat and a disgusted look on his face. Archer kept his face blank most of the time so when he showed emotion it was startling but this, this meant he was well and truly pissed off.

“Mr. Gray,” Dominick started but then there was a commotion behind Archer and as he stepped to the side, Eli Fisher and Austin Davis walked through the door. They were chatting and laughing.

“Dominick, so nice to see you,” Fisher said.

“Sorry for droppin’ in unannounced,” Austin said as he took off his overcoat. “And thank you again, Archer, for giving us a ride over on your jet. Always nice to travel with friends.”

No wonder Archer was pissed. Davis and Fisher were two of the biggest monsters in the Society. Fisher was known for keeping young girls hostage and Davis was thought to be involved in all kinds of vileness, but no one could ever prove it. The thought of having those two under this roof during the Davenport-Li meeting was enough to make Cash want to kill, preferably the two new visitors.

Dominick gathered the coats and went to tell Mrs. Munari to get rooms ready as the men walked further into the wide hallway.

“Walker,” Austin said as he extended his hand and then the men shook. “Nice to see you. You boys do get around. I was just chattin’ with Rush Fletcher in New York earlier today.”

Fisher added. “I was up in Maine when that awful business with the girl falling down the stairs happened. Flynn O’Connor dealt with it.”

“Archer,” Davis said as he turned to include the other man, “your team is top notch. No doubt Walker is here to deal with the Davenport meeting. Well done for being on top of things. Let’s hope it goes off without a hitch.”

Archer said nothing and his face was back to being a mask of neutrality, but Cash knew that look in his eye. If it weren’t against the rules, Archer would reach out and squeeze the life out of Austin Davis.

“Gentlemen,” Cash said, “I’m sure it’s been a long flight. Perhaps you’d like to fix yourself a drink in the library. I need to speak with Archer for a minute.”

“Of course,” Fisher said. “A drink sounds like a great idea.” The redness of his nose was a good indication that it wouldn’t be his first drink of the day. No doubt they’d cracked open the top shelf booze on the Society jet on the way over.

The two men headed to the library while Archer turned and went through the door under the stairs. He moved swiftly to the conference room. Cash closed the door after them.

“What in the fuck is going on?” Archer snarled.

Cash said in a quiet voice. “Vanessa broke into Davenport’s room and now some papers are missing. It could have been her, or someone else because I just found out the door lock is broken. No one is sure when that happened.”

“Son of a bitch!” Archer growled. “Is he in his room?”

Cash nodded. “I won’t point out yet again that having security cameras on the inside of the house in private rooms instead of just in the foyer would be helpful.”

Archer glared at him. “So noted, but once again I would point out to you that the members would lose their shit if they discovered they were being filmed.”

“Didn’t stop you in the Maine location.”

“They were already there. We just put them into play when we bought the place. Totally rewiring a house like this one to put cameras would be a nightmare not to mention they would be hard as hell to hide.

Cash sighed. Archer was not wrong.

“Let’s go get Davenport sorted now then.” Archer took the stairs two at a time with Cash in his wake. They knocked at the door and Davenport pulled it open in a rush. “Walk— Archer,” he said his eyebrows going up to his hairline. “I didn’t realize you were here.”
