Nick, on the other hand, has beautiful blue eyes and blondish hair just like me. He wears glasses sometimes, usually only for work or reading. He’s around six-foot-four so he towers over most people he meets and is built like a strong beanpole. He’s got muscles and a toned stomach since he works out but nothing super defined. I would call it skinny athletic, I guess. He is a people pleaser like me but confident as hell like Callie. Next to Callie and I, and our curvy bodies, he looks like a piece of thin meat between two sexy, curvy rolls. We are a good mix, I think.

“So were they just never going to tell you? What if you got sick and needed medical info or something?” Callie asked.

I gave her an annoyed look. “Girl, I don’t know; they would’ve had to tell me at that point, I guess. I’m over this consuming my brain when I can’t do anything about it right now. It will only upset me more if I think about the what-ifs. I need to wait for this test, take it, and then see where it gets me. Let’s keep packing.”

I am the queen of subject changes. I don’t know how to deal with the hard stuff. Callie usually calls me out, but this time, she nodded and stopped talking about it. We continued folding my clothes and placing them into their perspective-moving boxes.

Nick tried to break the tension and make me laugh by wearing one of my bras and walking around like a supermodel. I rolled my eyes and threw my tissue box at him. Then we all broke out into laughter. This fun is just what I needed; my best friends just being here acting like everything is normal.

“Jake said the house is coming along great. He’s done with almost all the painting and put up some shelves like we asked. He wants to know what color to make the music room and your room. He said he texted you yesterday, and you didn’t answer; now I know why,” she smirked.

I saw Nick roll his eyes. “What was the eye roll for?”

He looked at me, and I could swear I saw a blush creep up his neck like he didn’t mean for it to be seen. “Nothing. I just can’t believe you guys are moving in with him. He is such a tool bag.”

Callie started to speak, probably about to yell at him. Nick has always had an issue with Jake. He never liked him but dealt with him because of Callie. Before this conversation got out of hand, I cut her off.

“Tell Jake maybe a muted pink for my room and a light blue for the music room? I trust his judgment. You know I’m not picky. What do you think?”

Luckily for us, Jake builds houses, so he knows all about home improvements. We are saving a lot of money in that department. When looking for houses, we made sure the one we picked had an extra room to make a music studio. Now we both can give lessons for money, me on the guitar and Callie on the piano.

“Okay, I’ll text him. I like the blue idea. It will feel homey.”

She seemed to forget about what Nick said, thank God. She started to go back to what she was doing but paused for a moment, clutching a pair of my shorts, then looking back up at me. “Aubs, are you sure you’ll be ready for this move? Do you want to stay home since you don’t know what’s going on yet? Either way, it’s fine. You know we can handle the rent without you, and your room is there when you are ready.”

“Thanks, but I think I need this. Almost like a fresh start all around. My parents aren’t my favorite people right now, so some space might be just what we need.”

“Okay then, let’s put these boxes in my car, and I’ll drop them off at the house for you. It will be one less trip for you since I’m going there anyway. Nick, get to it.” She clapped her hands jokingly like he was a butler.

He scoffed at her and looked between us like he was appalled. “Why me?” he asked. “What’s wrong with your hands, Sweets?”

Nick had nicknames for both of us. Hers was Sweets because she is obsessed with smarties, and mine is Buttercup because of the shade of my hair. My nickname lost traction over the years, only coming out every once in a while, but hers has stuck. She hates it and I think he likes to torture her.

She batted her thick eyelashes at him jokingly, “You’re the big, strong man here, are you not?” She was trying to pump his ego by squeezing his arm muscles. He chuckled as he grabbed two boxes stacked on top of each other.

“Okay, but only because it’s for Aubs. I don’t like you anymore because you are so mean to me,” he said to Callie.

He kissed my cheek as he left.

“You wish you hated me,” Callie said as she winked.

They always had this banter about who loves who and who loves me more; it was pretty comical because I’m 99% sure they would choose each other over me without a second thought.

A few days later, the DNA kit arrived. Brie got the mail and left it on my bed with a note.

I will sit with you if you want. Let me know. I love you.

Love, Bean

That made me chuckle. That is a nickname I gave Brie when I was young because I couldn’t say Brielle’s name. She doesn’t love when I call her that, but it’s ingrained in my head and I still do it most days.

I did the test immediately and got it over with. I placed the swabs in the package and walked out to the blue mailbox at the end of our road. I contemplated not sending it at all, but I know it’s something I need to do.

This could change everything.
