She waved me off. “Oh, you hush. You don't even live here.” She smiled and I knew she was trying to be funny.

“How was your day, son?” Pops asked.

I looked over at him and he was looking at me over the rim of his glasses again. The man will never change. “It was pretty boring until that girl came in, honestly. I was just doing some paperwork in the back while the band was practicing in the back of the store. We had a few people come in today, but Miss Aubrey was definitely the highlight of my day. She was hot; I hope she’s looking for a job so I can stare at her every weekend.”

Mom looked over at me in disgust. I smiled as I stuffed the bread from my plate into my mouth.

“Want me to heat that pasta up for you?” Mom asked.

“No need. The plate will be empty in a second,” I said with my mouth full. Mom rolled her eyes. She hates it when I do that. She always comments that I’m going to die from choking.

Pops cleared his throat to get me to look at him. “Link, if she’s looking for a job, you better not bring her back here. I can’t have you monopolizing my employees again.”

He is referring to when I was nineteen. I hooked up with one of the girls who worked with us. When I didn’t want to continue seeing her, she started causing all sorts of issues for me, including recruiting her brother into trying to kick my ass inside the store. Her brother and I had to pay for quite a few broken instruments.

Pops looked up from his book and grinned at me over his glasses. I just shrugged and smiled big like I was an innocent angel.

“I’m serious, Link. No more monopolizing the women in this town. You need to settle down. You’re a catch. Why aren’t you dating a nice girl instead of just fuckin’ around?”

“August, please! Watch your language!” Mom said.

She was a saint for dealing with us all these years. She hates it when we swear, and I swear a lot. I think I rubbed off on Pops. It has always been her biggest pet peeve; we were like a pair of sailors swearing up a storm.

“He is right, though, Link; we are ready for cute, little, blue-eyed grandbabies.”

I choked on my bread. “I don’t think I’m the having babies’ kind of guy, momma. Maybe when I’m older.” I honestly didn’t mean it, because I do not want kids. Kids deserve to have a father who loves their mother fully, and I just don’t see that ever happening for me. I won’t ever get close enough to someone to fall in love like that. Falling in love can lead to people hurting you and I'm not letting that happen.

“Lincoln, you’re not a spring chicken, you know. It’s time, dear.”

“Mom, I’m only twenty-nine. That’s not exactly checking into a retirement home age.” I laughed and stood up. “I’m heading out. I’m going to hang with the band, so I’ll be home late tonight. Don’t wait up,” I said with a smirk.

Mom pointed at me and gave me the stink eye. “Behave and be the gentleman I know you are…and I don’t wanna hear it this time.”

She did hear me last time...shit. I laughed and put up three fingers.

“Scouts honor, mom.” I walked over and kissed her on her cheek. She poked me in the ribs, and I winced.

“I’m serious, Lincoln Matthew, behave.”

“I will Momma, I love you guys. See you in the morning after my run.”

I went straight to my house and got ready. It was fifty-five degrees, which was warm for January in Tennessee. Just in case the weather changed while I was out tonight, I wore jeans, a tight black long-sleeve sweater, and a tee underneath in case I got hot. I brought my brown leather jacket in case whoever I was bringing home with me tonight needed it to cover her short-ass dress. I went into my bedroom to grab a few condoms. You never know when you are going to need them, right? If she doesn’t want to come back here, the car or her house are fine choices too, in my opinion.

AUBREY

“That was fast,” Callie called out.

“Hey,” I walked over and plopped myself onto the bed with her. “It was…something, that's for sure.” I was in a daze and I couldn’t really even remember the walk here.

She nudged my shoulder.

“So, how was it? Was he nice? Tall? Was he super weirded out? It couldn’t have gone too well. That wasn’t even an hour. Tell me about–”

She kept rattling off questions as I tuned her out and sat there looking at the ceiling. I could feel that I was still quite flushed. She leaned over me putting her head directly above mine about an inch away. She was so close; I could smell the candy on her breath.

“Why are you so flushed? Did something happen?” she asked with caution.

“He was…hot,” I blurted out.
