“Christ!” I said rather loudly.

“No, just Link,” he said with a smirk.

“You scared the living shit out of me. What are you doing in here this late?” I gripped my chest, trying to get my heart to stop racing.

“Sorry.” He chuckled, and his smile made my stomach flutter with butterflies.

“I assume I’m in here for the same reason you are; the food is here. I couldn’t sleep because I can’t stop thinking about you.”

His admission surprised me, but I tried my hardest not to react. His smile was shining in the moonlight. He gestured to me with his utensil.

“You can put that weapon of mass destruction down now. I won’t bite you… unless you want me to.” He shoved another bite of food in his mouth and chewed it with a big smile. It looked like he was eating some sort of brownie in a mug or something. It looked good, whatever it was.

I put the pan down and rolled my eyes. My stomach and heart were doing all kinds of flips trying to process what he was saying.

“Sorry, you just startled me.”

I turned and went to the cabinet to grab a glass. Then I returned to the fridge, which was still open, and grabbed an apple and water from the door. I turned back towards him and leaned one hip against the counter.

I tipped my head toward him, “What are you eating over there?” I asked.

“It’s a protein mug cake with chocolate chips. Chocolate helps me sleep.” He said it with a mouth full of mug cake. It was cute that he wasn’t trying to be super proper and polite around me. It was that sexy, I-don’t-give-a-fuck attitude that was going to get me in some trouble.

“Want me to make you one?”

I held up my apple. “I’m good with this. That will make my ass bigger with one bite.”

“Is that a bad thing?” His smile was devious.

I turned back to the sink to clean my hands, mostly to hide the blush on my face. A few seconds later, Lincoln came up behind me and placed his mug in the sink. I could smell him; his scent was intoxicating like a deep woodsy smell. He leaned over me, putting one hand on each side of me, allowing his chest to hit my back ever so slightly. He lowered his head and put his lips right at my ear lobe. His hot breath made my own breath hitch. I had to close my eyes to gain some composure.

“Lincoln, what are you—”

“Why won’t you call me Link?” His voice was low and sultry.

My whole body tensed, shivers ran down my spine, and I felt flutters erupt in my stomach. This man was making me feel things I haven’t allowed myself the freedom to feel in almost two and a half years. The last time I felt anything remotely like this was before Max ripped my life apart by cheating on me. I’ve kept all thoughts and feelings close to my heart, guarding them with all I have.

I placed my hands on the edge of the sink so I wouldn’t be tempted to reach out and touch him. I turned my head so I was somewhat looking at him and cleared my throat. “You said that’s what your friends call you; I wasn’t aware we were friends yet, Mr. Lincoln.” It came out much more whispered than I intended, making one side of his mouth turn up. He knew he was making me nervous.

“I hope to become more than that, Miss Aubrey.”

I felt myself getting aroused. My mind was racing. I needed to get some space between us before I let him fuck me right here on the counter. I gained my bearings and tapped my lip like I was thinking about it. He seemed to back off a little, and then I successfully ducked under one of his arms to get out of his direct contact. I couldn’t think while having him that close to me. I turned to look at him.

“Haven’t thought about it, honestly,” I said with a nervous smile. He knew I was lying.

I leaned against the island in the center of the room, keeping some distance between us. He was still standing there with both hands in the same place, head hanging low like I hurt his ego or something. He turned around to face me and crossed his arms. My breath stopped when I saw his erection tenting his pajama shorts. He was clearly not shy because he did nothing to hide it.

My eyes traveled up a bit. He had the nicest set of abs I think I’d ever seen in my life. The moonlight in the dark kitchen was hitting them perfectly. I wanted to run my hands, mouth, tongue, hell; I wanted to rub my entire body all over him. I shook my head and averted my eyes, hoping he didn’t catch me staring, but the snicker I heard told me he had.

“What will it take for you to be my friend? What’s stopping you?”

My brows went up in surprise and confusion, and I wasn’t quite sure what he was asking. For some reason, I grew some balls and asked him straight out.

“If that is all you want, we can be friends.” He was quiet and didn’t respond. I sighed. “What is it exactly that you want from me, Lincoln?”

He took several steps forward, closing some of the space between us. “I want you to be honest with me.”

My brows creased in confusion. “About what? I haven’t lied to you.”
