Ifelt my cock stir at the sight of her. She stood at my door in a strappy nightgown, covering almost nothing. I was trying my best not to stare at her nipples.

She wrapped her arms around herself. I immediately pulled her in. She walked over and sat down on the couch. She grabbed one of the blankets to cover herself like she was embarrassed.

I adjusted myself before walking over because I didn’t want to make her even more uncomfortable with the huge bulge in my sweatpants. I grabbed another blanket in case one wasn’t enough and sat beside her. I gave her some space, but I also didn’t sit all the way over on the other side of the couch. I wanted to keep her within my reach.

“Hey, you okay?” She was quiet and didn’t look at me at first. I pushed some of her hair behind her ear. “What’s going on in that beautiful head of yours? You disappeared on me when we got home. Talk to me.”

She looked up and smiled, then quickly looked down again. I didn’t think she was going to answer, but then she whispered, “We need to talk.”

I looked at her nervously. “Do you want a drink or anything to eat? I grabbed some snacks in case we came back here after the date.”

“You did?” She gave me a small smile. She looked relieved. I think that made her more comfortable for some reason. She pulled her legs up under herself. “Do you have anything warm to drink?”

“I can grab you a tea bag or hot chocolate from the house. Does that work?”

“Yeah, either would be great, thank you.”

When I came back, I tried to lighten the mood by joking a little. “So, will you tell me what’s happening, or are you trying to keep me guessing?”

“I honestly don’t know exactly what I want to say yet. I just wanted to sit with you for a minute.” She looked up at me. Her eyes looked a little hurt. “I can go back to the main house if you want to head to bed.”

I set the tea down on the table in front of her. I sat directly next to her this time. She smiled when I lifted her legs and put them across my lap. A few minutes passed, and she finally spoke.

“What are we doing? We can’t really be doing this. We can’t honestly believe we can date.”

She leaned down to grab the cup.

“What do you mean? You are drinking tea, and I’m having water.” I smiled, even though I knew what she meant.

“You know what I mean.” She smiled and playfully kicked my leg, though the smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. “I know this was only date one, and normally a first date doesn’t get this deep, but this isn’t exactly a conventional situation. We can’t just never see each other again if things don’t go well. You will still have to see me sometimes, especially on holidays and birthdays, or at least I hope so. Are we stupid for entertaining this? Like what are we going to do if—”

I grabbed a hold of the outside of her thigh, “Aubrey…what is it you’re really worried about? I mean, I agree; yes, what you’re saying is important, but that’s not the only thing that’s bothering you, is it?”

“No…it’s not.”

I pulled her closer. “Okay, spill.”

AUBREY

I was nervous. Link grabbed ahold of my empty hand and started rubbing the backs of my fingers as he relaxed our hands on my knee.

“Aubrey, talk to me. What happened in the car before? Did I upset you or something?”

I shook my head and squeezed his hand tighter. “God, no. You were perfect; I meant it when I said I had a great time. Honestly, it was the best date I’ve ever been on. It’s all me. I think I’m in my head about all of this. I am broken, and I ruined the night. I’m so sorry.”

“You didn’t ruin anything. You are allowed to change your mind, and you don’t need to explain yourself if that’s all it was. I do get the feeling that something else is happening though. Tell me, what’s going on?”

I paused for a second, then lifted my pinky in front of him. “Okay, but first, pinky swear there is no getting mad or offended and no judging.”

He smiled and then interlinked his pinky with mine. “I pinky promise.”

We intertwined the rest of our fingers, and the word vomit just started coming. “I’m scared you’re going to hurt me like my ex did.” I paused for a moment to see if I would get a reaction, and I didn’t. He was listening intently. “I’m also scared I will somehow hurt you. I’m scared of a relationship again.”

“Aubrey, so am I. I’ve never even been in one.”

I gave him a weird look. “Never? You can’t be serious.”

He looked a little embarrassed. “Totally serious. I’ve had one-night stands and remained friends but never dated anyone. I’ve never trusted anyone enough to want more.”
