“I’m sorry, ma’am. Whoever booked your room didn’t realize we were doing maintenance on the third floor, so we overbooked. I’m really sorry. For the inconvenience we can give you credit for a free stay in the future. You can use it anywhere in the USA this year.”

I was still confused. “So, you have no rooms available at all? Where am I supposed to stay?"

“Aubrey,” I felt her nudge me out of my panic. “It’s not a big deal. Let’s go to your dad’s.”

“Yeah, but I—I wanted alone time with you.”

This would happen when I was trying not to see him while she was here. She will know the minute she meets him that something is off.

“Aubrey, we are alone all the time. If it is that important, we can just stay in your room.”

I looked at her, and she looked worried. I realized I was acting crazy, and I needed to chill out.

“Um, Yes. Yes, we can. Let’s go.”

I texted Pops on the way to his house to let him know I was coming back earlier than originally planned, and he was ecstatic. He told me they were out with a few friends, so they probably wouldn’t see us until later tonight or in the morning, which was fine with me.

I was relieved that Lincoln’s car wasn’t there when I pulled up to the house. I got Brie all situated in my room. She immediately wanted to shower, so I went downstairs to grab something for us to eat, and that’s when I heard a car door shut. Before I could move an inch, Lincoln was rushing through the door.

“Hey! You’re home,” he said breathlessly.

I bit my lip to keep my smile at bay because it was actually kind of cute.

“Hey. The hotel is overbooked, so I’m back.”

“Where is Brielle?”

I pointed up the stairs. “Showering. I was making us some food. Do you want some?” I was proud of myself for holding a conversation without faltering much. I think I’m doing pretty well.

“Um, sure,” He sat down and stared at me. I wasn’t looking at him, but I could feel his gaze on my back.

“You look nice,” he added when the silence took over.

I smiled but I couldn’t let him see it, so I didn’t turn around. “You saw me a few hours ago Lincoln.”

“You looked good then too,” he retorted.

My insides were twisting. I needed to gain some self-control before I turned around and tried to kiss his stupid face.

“She always looks good,” I heard from the hallway.

I turned and saw Brie standing there smiling with my clothes on, and she was pulling the towel off her head letting her long dark hair fall to the sides. I never understood why she tried to wear my clothes. She’s so little, and I’m so not. She literally swims in them.

“Brielle. You have an entire suitcase of clothes, and you’re wearing mine?”

She looked down at herself and then back up at me, “Bitch I missed you, okay?” I just laughed at her and let it go.

Lincoln got up and introduced himself.

“Ah, so you’re the infamous Lincoln, huh? You better be treating my sister right or I’ll kick your ass.”

I froze in place, but managed to turn back toward the food. I didn’t want to have this conversation right now, not ever, really. I just wanted to eat and go upstairs.

“I will. Aubrey deserves the world. I’d love to give it to her if she will let me.” I felt them both staring at my back, but I couldn’t turn around. Hearing him say those words stung..

I never wanted the world…I just wanted him, and now I’ll never have either one.
