Lincoln

Look at me… please.

I don’t want to make a scene in front of Brielle, but I wanted to talk to her so badly. Her sister seems sweet, but she just gave me a look when she talked about hurting her sister, and I don’t ever want to see that look again. It doesn’t seem like she knows anything about Aubrey and I not being together because she surely wouldn’t have made that comment if she did. Maybe there is a sliver of hope to get Aubrey back, but first I need to get her to hear me out. There has got to be a reason she hasn’t said anything to Brielle about us not being together. It’s best for now if I act as if everything is fine, and then I’ll talk to Aubrey when we can be alone.

Brielle was telling us about the trip she took with her friends and Aubrey was telling her something about Callie and Nick. It sounds like Callie and Nick fight like they’re married, but who am I to judge? I hope to get a the chance to know them both better. I hope this thing with Aubrey and me will blow over soon, and we can be happy again.

“So, Lincoln, what is it that you do here in White Mountain? I heard you were quite the ladies’ man before my sister stole your heart. I heard—”

“Brielle. Quit it,” Aubrey mumbled.

Brielle gave Aubrey a sly look. “What, the way you talk about him, it’s like you found your soulmate. I assume he feels the same way.”

I looked over at Aubrey, and she was blushing. I could only see the side of her face, but I could swear I saw some shine in her eyes, which broke my heart.

I tried to remain calm as I spoke, “She did steal my heart,” I smiled. “It’s hers forever.”

I thought hearing that would make her smile…Wrong.

“I can’t do this,” Aubrey admitted.

She started to walk away, so I stood up to go after her. “Aubrey, wait.”

“Enough Lincoln. I don’t wanna hear it.”

I stopped and watched her go up the stairs.

Brielle was still staring at the stairs. I sat back down as I saw her fist clench around her fork, and then she looked right at me, a death stare worse than Aubrey’s.

“Are you going to explain that before I do something stupid or am I going to have to google how to hide a body?”

AUBREY

I could hear Brielle yelling at Lincoln, but I couldn’t hear exactly what she was saying. Honestly, I didn’t care. I just needed to let out a good cry. It will be fine. I know it will. I just need some time. I took a shower, and while I was in there, I heard a light knock at the door.

“You okay Aubs?”

I swallowed down my cries and tried to sound as normal as possible. “I’m fine, Bean. I’ll be out in a minute.” I heard her feet shuffle away from the door, and I sighed in relief.

When I came out of the bathroom, my dinner was sitting on my bed, and it made me smile that she was always thinking of me and trying to take care of me.

“You didn’t finish; thought you might want it.”

“Thanks. So is Lincoln alive or dead in the backyard?” I tried to sound carefree like I was making a joke despite not smiling.

“He’s alive…for now. He told me everything though.” She looked pissed. “Or I guess his side of things. Why didn’t you tell me instead of letting me go on and on like an idiot?”

I shrugged.

“You told him you love him?” she said hesitantly. It was definitely a question, not an accusation.

My breath caught a little. “Kind of. It’s too fast, I know… I didn’t mean to, but I meant it, so I guess in a way I did.”

She continued without any judgment. “You asked him to come home with you?”

I started brushing my hair, and she motioned for me to sit in front of her so she could do it for me. I sat between her legs. “No, I didn’t get to that part before he broke up with me… but I think I would have at least asked him to date me for a little while.”

“Damn Aubs, that’s serious. I didn’t think you would ever talk about love like that again after Max.”
