My thoughts were interrupted when I heard Kayla come up behind me. "Hey Aubrey, how are you?"

She called me by the correct name this time. I tried not to look so shocked. "Hey, I'm good. Just taking a break. How are you?"

"Well, I should be helping with the costumes, but I got pulled into a meeting with one of my student's parents, so I'm a bit late."

She pointed up at Brie. "Who's the new girl?"

"That's my sister, Brielle. She will be helping with the sets. Only for a few more days, unfortunately. Then she'll be going home."

"Did she paint all that by herself? She's amazing…She’s pretty hot too." She was gesturing to the cardboard buildings that Brie was working on.

I was caught off guard by the hot comment but again, everyone thinks so, so it was nothing new.

"Mostly, yeah. She's great, but she doesn't paint a lot anymore, unfortunately."

"Why?" she asked.

I shrugged. "Not sure, but I'm glad she's doing it again."

"Well, she should keep doing it because she is great. Better than anything I would have done.” She laughed. “All right, It was good talking to you. I'm going to head up there. I'll see you later." She started to walk away.

"Oh, Aubrey, I hope Link told you how sorry I am. I don't know what had gotten into me. I was just super jealous and didn't know how to handle it. I've never been turned down before if you could believe that."

I smiled at her. "I believe that wholeheartedly, Kayla. Thank you for apologizing, and I forgive you. Let’s pretend it never happened." It seems like I’m doing a lot of pretending things didn’t happen lately.

My brain finally registered the conversation that just took place once she walked away. I couldn't believe I just had a civil conversation with Kayla, of all people.

"Is that the hot redhead that was trying to get with Link?” Brie asked as she came off the stage, wiping paint on MY leggings that she stole.

"Yep, that's her, and she thinks you’re hot." I chuckled.

She thought for a moment. “Well, she is fucking gorgeous, but she was mean to you so that makes her off-limits. Need me to kick her ass?" Brie raised her brow.

I laughed loudly. Some kids looked at me like I was crazy, but they moved on quickly, talking about some girl dating some guy.

"Brie, I love you, but she would break you in half. I don't need you to kick her ass. She apologized again, and we had a civilized conversation. It was nice for a change." She didn't look convinced but she let it go.

I gave Brie the keys and told her I would walk or get a ride home with Lincoln after I helped him clean up. She left without saying anything else.

"You were great up there, ya know," I said to Lincoln, motioning to the stage. “With the kids, they love you.”

He looked over and smiled at me. "Thanks, Songbird. You are pretty great yourself.”

I helped Link carry a few things to his house after rehearsal. I lingered at the door before walking in.

"Thanks for today,” he said in a hushed tone. I almost didn’t hear him.

"Anytime Lincoln." I turned to leave, but he spoke again.

"Hey, Aubrey…are you sure about all this?” He gestured his hand between us.

I shrugged, "I have to be."

He looked away. "If you say so."
