With love,

Mr. Grumpy Butt

I knew I had the goofiest grin on my face, and I was happy no one else was here to see it. I took a shower and put on the shirt with some pajama shorts. I spent about an hour up there just writing. I was so lost in playing my guitar that I had my eyes closed when I heard a knock at the door.

“Come in.”

I smiled really big when I saw it was Lincoln. I put the guitar down and moved to the edge of my bed.

“I was right,” he said.

He looked so handsome leaning against the doorframe in his flannel with the arms rolled up a quarter of the way, and dark ripped jeans. He had black paint smeared on his cheek. He looked like a lumberjack without the big burly beard.

“Right about what?”

He nudged his head toward me. “Looks better on you.” He gave me a shy grin, and I rolled my eyes but couldn’t help that goofy grin coming back to my face.

We talked for a few minutes about what has been happening around here since I left. Nothing spectacular. When he was walking out the door, I couldn’t help but ask.

“Will you be at dinner?”

“Of course I will. It’s for you… I would do anything for you.”

He turned and smiled as he walked down the stairs.

Dinner was great. We went to IHOP, which is my favorite. Weird, I know, but I never even look at the menu anymore. I always get an American cheese omelet with pancakes, strawberry syrup, and a giant glass of chocolate milk. I tried to get fruit instead of pancakes once, and it completely ruined the entire experience.

It was probably a coincidence, but Pops got an omelet too. It was so fun seeing both sides of my family getting along so well. I’m glad we came without everyone else. It was good for my parents to talk and get to know each other. They never had that chance, and now they will.

I overheard their conversation once they returned to the kitchen to bring in Liza and my dad a little bit earlier. There were a lot of stern words given to my Mom and Dad for the fact that they didn’t continue looking. There was a lot of crying. It seems to have ended okay because there was no animosity on either side and they were all sitting here getting along. I am sure the conversation isn’t completely over, but hopefully, everything stays civil.

I chose to walk home. I missed running around here. Lincoln came along for the walk. I stopped and turned toward him. “You walking too?” He just smiled and kept looking straight ahead. I smiled and started walking again. “Thanks, Lincoln.”

“Anytime.”

Once we got home, we were about to go our separate ways when he spoke up. “Wanna cut my hair?”

I was surprised by the question. “Now? Um…sure. Come up to my room.”

I went into the bathroom and changed out of my jeans into comfy clothes. I set the chair on some towels to save myself from cleaning. I wet his hair and started cutting. I didn’t even ask him how he wanted it cut; I also had absolutely no idea what I was doing.

“This is not going to look good.” I laughed.

“I will just buzz it if it sucks.”

“Really,” I paused and looked at him. He just smiled. “Don’t buzz it.”

He smirked, “Then don’t make it suck.”

I jokingly pushed his shoulder. “I’ll do my best, I promise.”

After another moment, he gently clutched my wrist and sincerely stared into my eyes. “Thanks for this.”

I nodded my head and pulled my arm away and went on cutting.

When I was done, he checked himself out in my mirror and kissed my cheek.

“It looks great, Songbird. Thanks again.”
