“I can tell… it fits you.” She thought for a moment. “Or maybe it's the company. Maybe he is the one that fits you.”

She smiled this time, making it more genuine, nodding toward Lincoln.

Lincoln was pretty quiet all day, and he chose not to sit near me outside. I don’t think it was on purpose, but he kept giving me a grin here and there, anytime I would catch him staring. I missed that smile. I missed everything about him.

Lincoln

God, she’s beautiful. I can’t stop stealing glances at her. She’s like a drug…. and hearing her sing…God, I’m doing my best not to run up and drag her into my house. That hug this morning was everything; I needed to touch her…but now I need to keep my distance. I need to give her the space she asked for, continue to heal, and let her miss me so that when I make the ultimate move, it will actually mean something. Pops and Elijah have been helping me plan for the ultimate romantic gesture to show her I’m all in.

I got up to go inside to her room. I have a few letters I want to give her, but I will put them in her luggage so she will get them when she gets home. I put them in the zipper on the front of her bag. She’s mentioned before that she never remembers to check that pocket when she unpacks. For now, I need to love her from a distance.

She was in the kitchen when I made my way back downstairs.

“Hey you.”

“Hey. What are you doing inside?” she asked.

“Just needed to warm up a bit.”

She looked down at her feet and bit her lip like she wanted to say something else but stopped herself. She looked back at me, and I felt like her eyes were seeing right through me.

“Lincoln. Are you okay?”

I paused for a second. I wasn’t sure if I was going to lie or tell her the truth, so I went with a little bit of both.

“I will be. I am talking to someone about my trauma. It’s getting better every day, I think.”

She looked back down. She almost looked sad at my answer. “Good…Good, I’m glad.”

I want to pick her up and kiss her and let her know that it will all be okay, but we aren't there yet. “Are you? Okay, I mean.”

She paused for a beat. “Me? Yeah, don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine. Today’s been amazing. I missed it here.”

“It missed you too.”

I smiled at her, and she smiled back. She knew I was talking about myself missing her, but she didn’t comment on it.

“Okay, I’ll see you back outside, I guess.”

She turned around, and I couldn’t help but reach for her hand.

“Aubrey,” She turned toward me. “I’m happy I got to see you. I hope you enjoyed today. I know I did.”

She leaned up and kissed my cheek. Then she whispered in my ear. “I had an amazing birthday.” She moved away and smiled. “I’m happy I got to see you too.”

I couldn’t help but smile back. “Good, I just wanted you to know in case we don’t get to talk before you leave tomorrow.”

“Thanks, but I will make sure I come say goodbye. I can’t leave without a hug from my favorite person.” She paused for a second but it was short-lived. “Pops gives the best hugs.” She laughed and winked before walking out the door.

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

Aubrey

It’s been a few days since I’ve been back in Connecticut. I finally unpacked last night and found some of Lincoln's letters wrapped up as a present. It was such a sweet gesture, but the letters were even more beautiful. My favorite was after we made love for the first time. It was sweet and simple but meaningful as hell. I definitely didn’t think he had this kind of sweetness in him.

Dear Songbird,

I’m writing this the day after we made love for the first time. It was beautiful. You are beautiful. I loved hearing your sexy sounds and having you in my arms. I hope I get to have you in my arms for the foreseeable future. You are perfect. I hope you know that.
