Thank you for being so open with me about your past. Thank you for trusting me. I hope I can prove that I can be the man you deserve.

You just caught me writing this at work and I think you are having some weird feelings and are afraid to tell me. I hope you know you can tell me anything. Like I told you last night in our conversation, I can see this going somewhere. I don’t exactly know what makes this situation different or why I suddenly want more than a fling, but I do know that last night was the best day of my life thus far, and I can’t wait for the next one.

P.S. I’ll keep those panties safe; I promise.

With love,

Mr. Grumpy Butt

This man… I love him. I’m starting to think I made the wrong decision coming back. I can’t stop thinking about him. I can’t stop loving him. The last trip was strictly platonic, and I couldn’t stop my brain from pining for him. He said it was getting better for him. I can’t ruin that by telling him I made a mistake. I need to just let him heal.

My attraction for him is only getting more intense. The dream I had on my birthday… hot damn, what that man was doing with his mouth. Good Lord, I woke up sweating. I felt myself getting a little hot and bothered, but then a text from Callie ripped me from those thoughts. We are meeting a few towns over in about an hour at a bridal shop so she can look at dresses. But first, coffee.

As always, I walked into my favorite coffee shop. There was a line, but it was not horrible. So I waited.

“Can I buy you a drink?”

I froze at that voice because I knew who it was before I even turned around. I swallowed the lump in my throat and turned.

“Max? What are you doing here?” I tried to keep my voice level and unbothered, but I knew I was failing miserably.

“I’m just home seeing my parents. My dad had a heart attack a few days ago, and I took off work to spend time with him so my mom could get a break. I’m just grabbing Mom a coffee before heading to the hospital so she can go home.”

My defenses fell, and I placed my hand on his arm. “Wow, Max, I’m so sorry. Is everything okay?”

He smiled. “Other than him bitching about having to eat better, everything’s great,” he laughed. “You know him.”

“I do,” I replied. We both broke into laughter.

His laugh was still the same, and it made me smile for a moment.

“So, can I buy you a coffee? We can sit and catch up for a few?” he asked.

I didn’t answer, but I think he saw how hesitant I was.

“Just a few minutes, Aubrey. I think we have a few things to discuss, don’t you?”

After a few moments, I agreed.

“Why the hell not? Throw in a muffin, and you have yourself a deal.”

He smiled and I went to sit down while he ordered. I can do this. We were both relatively quiet at first, so I broke the silence. “So, how is everything other than the stuff with your dad?”

He looked a little nervous. “Things are okay. I broke up with Stacey not too long ago because I caught her sleeping with one of my teammates.”

I couldn’t help the shock that covered my face. “Max, I’m so sorry.”

He shook his head and smiled. “No, please don’t do that. You do not feel sorry for me. I hurt you and got exactly what I deserved. Karma really got my ass.”

I couldn’t help but smile a little because he was right, but no one deserves this. “No, you didn’t deserve that, Max. No one deserves to feel the way I did. So I’m sorry she hurt you like that.”

“I appreciate it, but as I said, I don’t deserve your sympathy. I don’t even deserve to have this coffee with you.” He sipped his coffee and continued. “How are things for you?”

I went on to tell him about the changes in my life over the last few months. I told him about Pops and Liza and even Lincoln. I told him about the turmoil between Lincoln and I.

“Wow, sounds like you have a lot of stuff happening.” Then he looked me in the eyes. “It also sounds like he really loves you.”

I blushed a little because I didn’t expect him to respond that way, and now I don’t really know how to respond back. It was weird talking to him like this. We didn’t even talk like this when we were together.
