“I got your message,” Patrick greets, skipping the formalities. “What’s going on?”

“Harper’s gone.” Those words burn my mouth just as much as they did the day she was taken.

“Was it Liam?” I forgot for a moment that we haven’t spoken to Patrick since our original plan was set in place.

“No. Liam’s dead.” Mac answers without an ounce of regret.

“Who then? Declan hasn’t left Ireland, and he called off all the hits on her weeks ago.”

“Exactly why we’re so confused. He planted a man within our security company, one we hired to watch Harper. Two weeks ago, he ambushed me and Harper in the apartment. Killed our second guard, knocked me unconscious, drugged Harper, and took off. We have no idea where he took her or what their plans with Harper are.” The line momentarily goes silent.

“I had nothing to do with this Ronan. I swear to you. I am not a good man, but I would never stoop as low as to hurt an innocent woman.”

“We know, Patrick,” Finn answers, “We were just calling to see if you had any other ideas.”

“Ideas?” he asks in confusion.

“None of this is making sense,” I deadpan. “If Declan wanted Harper dead, why didn’t Logan just kill her that night? Why take her—”

“What did you just say?” Patrick asks as he cuts me off. All of us look at one another in confusion.

“If Declan wanted Harper dead—”

“No,” he interrupts me again. “The name. What was the name of the guard?” The urgency in his voice is unmistakable.

“Logan,” I bite out, his name like venom on my tongue. “The guard’s name is Logan.”

“Holy fucking shit.” I immediately hear the surprise in Patrick’s voice.

“What?” Finn asks, standing from his spot on the couch next to me. “What is it, Patrick?”

“What did he look like?”

“Uh . . . tall, dark blonde hair, dark eyes, crooked nose.”

The line goes quiet again, and I can’t fucking handle the anticipation. “Patrick!”

“They’re not going to kill her,” he finally answers wearily.

“What do you mean? What are you talking about? Who is Logan?” My questions become more and more frantic.

“Logan is Declan’s protege. Don’t ask me why, but Declan took him in years ago when Logan was only eleven or twelve. He was an orphan Declan found on the streets. Since then, Declan has been turning Logan into a copy of himself, and Logan did anything and everything Declan asked him to. Wherever Declan was, Logan wasn’t too far behind. Until a couple of months ago.”

“What happened?” I ask.

“Nobody knew. All of a sudden, Logan was just gone. Whenever someone asked Delcan where Logan disappeared, all he would say was that he ‘Had to go away.’ All of us thought the whole thing was strange. It didn’t make sense, until a couple of weeks ago, one of Declan’s cronies let it slip.”

“Patrick…” I snap. I understand he’s trying to help, but he could really speed it the fuck up. “What. The hell. Happened?”

“Declan caught Logan fucking some guy. Apparently, Declan freaked out, saying how much of a disgrace it was that a man he took in as his own turned out to be a fag.” I don’t miss the way everyone in the room flinches at the term. We’re a lot of things, but being judgemental of anyone’s sexual preferences is not one of them. “Everyone else thought Declan killed him.”

“But not you?”

“No. That is too good of an opportunity for Declan to miss. Logan worships the ground Declan walks on. And if he really did fuck up that badly, he would do anything to get back into Declan’s good graces. Anything . . . ”

“Like get sent here to infiltrate the McDermott’s syndicate and kidnap Harper,” Luca interjects.

Patrick doesn’t question the unfamiliar voice in the room; it’s not important. “But that still doesn’t answer my question. Why not just kill her? Why kidnap her?”
