Page 88 of Dangerously Kept

It takes a few seconds for what I just said to register in their idiotic brains, but once it does, they know how royally fucked they both are. “Shit,” bowl cut groans as he hangs his head.

“Shit is right, you fucking idiots.” Luca laughs behind me as Finn walks up next to me. “Should have ditched the car and crawled back into whatever hole you came from.”

Standing up straight, I cross my arms over my chest as Finn asks, “Don’t suppose there’s any chance you’ll tell us where Declan is?”

The two of them are silent for a moment before beer gut spits in our direction. “The lot of you can fuck right off.”

I watch Finn as he watches them, looking for any indication on their faces that they might tell us where Declan is. After a few seconds, he looks over at me. “Fuck it. We’ll find Declan without them. I don’t have the patience for them today.”

“Couldn’t agree more, brother.” As much as I’d love to spend hours on end making them feel pain they’ve never felt before until they pray to whatever God they believe in for death, hoping they’ll eventually tell us where Declan is, I’d rather be home with our girl.

They’re only here to send a message, after all.

“Enzo, you’re up.”

Enzo approaches from behind and begins pouring the gallon of gasoline over things one and two, who are back to flailing around like a couple of fish. It’s too little too late, buddies. You’re about to pay for what you did to my Pretty Girl.

I take bowl cut’s phone from my pocket, which I grabbed before we tied them up. I scroll through the contacts until I find Declan’s name and hold the screen over my shoulder. “Can you call Sebastian and see if he can trace this number?” I ask Luca.

“Yeah, one sec.” A few seconds later, Sebastian picks up, and Luca speaks softly, “No, we’re fine. I just need you to see if you can trace this number.” Luca gives Sebastian the number, and we wait while Enzo continues soaking them in gasoline. “It’s alright. We’ll be done soon.”

“Nothing?” I ask.

“No. He said the phone has some kind of software that makes it look like the signal is coming from fifty different locations. He said he could get it eventually, but it would take him a couple of days.”

I let out a heavy sigh. We’ll just have to figure out something else. In the meantime, I hit the video chat icon next to Declan’s name. It only takes a few rings for him to answer, and his ugly fucking face fills the screen.

“Cormac. I’d ask what you’re doing with Jarod’s phone, but I’m sure I already know the answer.”

I chance a glance at Finn, who’s gone catatonically still at the sound of Declan’s voice. “Much like Logan, the men you sent to do your dirty work today are absolute wastes of oxygen.”

“They burned down Harper’s precious store, did they not?”

The sound of her name spilling from his mouth makes me clench my jaw, but I force myself to maintain my composure. “They then proceeded to drive to the closest bar and celebrate their hard day’s work instead of dumping their car. Which, by the way, is right next door to one of our most well-used buildings. Like I said, waste of fucking oxygen.”

“Is there a purpose to this phone call?” His voice remains calm, but judging by the muscle ticking in his jaw and the redness of his face, I can tell he’s anything but.

“We just wanted to make something clear.”

“And what is that? That you killed my men? I have a dozen more where they came from. If they were stupid enough to get caught, then they deserve to die.”

“I haven’t killed them yet. I wanted you to see firsthand that I’m just as deranged as you are.” I bring the phone closer to my face. “But what makes me even more of a threat is that I’m willing to risk everything for her. We all are. You risk your life for no one and nothing. You’re nothing but an old, weak coward. You’ve messed with my family for the last time. You better treat these last few days on this earth as a dream come true. Because when I find you, I’ll be your worst nightmare.”

“Fuck me. That gave me goosebumps.” Enzo whispers wide-eyed next to Finn, who’s now staring right at me instead of off into space.

“Finn, do it.” Finn blinks, and the fog clears. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a lighter Luca had in his glove box.

“No, no, no!” Beer gut screams. “We’ll tell you whatever you want to know!”

My best friend turns to face them. “ I don’t give a fuck. You wanted to play with fire, so play with fucking fire.” He throws the lighter into the pool of gas at their feet, and I flip the camera so Declan can watch his men go up in flames.

I can’t hear anything else Declan’s saying over the men’s agonizing screams, so I prop the phone up against the discarded gas can on the ground. He can watch them burn for all I care.

“God, that always smells fucking awful.” Luca throws his suit jacket over his nose.

The four of us walk toward the door, and the screams have stopped by the time we reach it. We’ll call our clean-up crew to take care of what’s left of the bodies and their car, but now I just want to go home and see Harper.
