She slowly skimmed them upward, taking in the feel of his firm muscular chest, and she couldn’t help but wonder what it would feel like to press her naked breasts against his bare skin. At a snail’s pace, she slid her hands down from his chest to his stomach. When she reached the top of his jeans, she tugged on his T-shirt.

He spun to face her. Instinctively, she tilted her head back, closed her eyes, and swiped her tongue across her lips. She was ready for him.

He cradled her head in his hands. He held his position, while his apprehension penetrated her cheeks through his hands.

What’s wrong? Why was he hesitating?

Surely, he knew badly she wanted him. His face was so close to hers, so she glided her tongue over her lips again as she skimmed her hands under his T-shirt and over his firm, bare chest.

He leaned closer, and her nipples grew hard in anticipation. Her breath hitched.

Then he pressed his warm lips to her cheek, and released her head from his hands.

She stood there for a moment, dumbfounded. “Did I do something wrong?”

“Absolutely not,” he reassured her.

“Then why didn’t you kiss me? I get the impression you want to.”

He raked his hands through his thick, dark hair. His intense, sympathetic gaze didn’t waver. “Elizabeth, I want to kiss you more than you can possibly imagine. That’s the problem, once I start I don’t think I’ll be able to stop with just a kiss. And what if you’re not ready? What if it brings back a bad memory from...” He closed his eyes for a couple of beats and then refocused on her. “This is important, and I want it to be right when it happens.”

At this very moment, she’d now begun to understand his hesitation, and she knew beyond a doubt that he loved her. The words he spoke made her want him even more. He didn’t take sex lightly. In fact, it wasn’t just sex to him, it was making love.

Chapter Twenty-One

Elizabeth returned to work the next day to find that Mr. James and Patrick had cut their trip to Chicago short, and returned to New York. She wondered exactly how long she would be keeping her job after the way she spoke to Mr. James the day before. But deep down, she didn’t care anymore, she wasn’t going to let them treat her that way, and if it meant losing her job, so be it. Actually, he’d be an idiot to fire her now, considering what she had on Patrick, or was he, or they, that arrogant?

It wasn’t even 11:00 a.m. yet and she was sure Joe had called at least ten times to check on her. Each time, she assured him that Mr. James and Patrick were en route back to New York, and she was fine.

In between Joe’s calls, Mr. Kent buzzed her extension and offered to take her to lunch at Ebbits Deli.

A half-hour later, she watched her boss fidget with the wrapper of his sandwich.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

“Yes,” he quickly replied before he shook his head.
