Page 38 of The Worst Mate Ever

“Right, so how is it she infects others with her power? What is the point of that?” Mom asked as she eyed me with a hint of disapproval. Obviously, I didn’t react like a future coven leader.

“It does not explain why, though, the how is a simple spell. She uses vampires and shifters to infect the witches. There is also mention of some fertility experiments she seems to perform on her infected victims, resulting in born dark witches. It appears that many of the children born of her experiments had gone on to be worshipped by the humans as gods before disappearing mysteriously.”

“Like Hathor,” I surmised.

Marlin nodded. “Yes, though it would seem that the two dark witches are of a similar age. However, a name you might recognize would be the Norse mythology.”

“Well, that is interesting,” I sighed. “But I would be more interested to know what it was she was experimenting for. Clearly, she was looking for something. I don’t see her just getting a kick out of watching people make babies.”

“That’s enough, Brady,” Mom said. “Thank you, Marlin. If you find any more information, bring it directly to me or my son. Anything to do with the witch Minerva is a top priority at this time.”

“My pleasure, Diana.” Marlin gave a curt bow before taking his seat.

“Is there any other business everyone would like to discuss?” Mom asked as silence answered her back. “Very well. You all have a wonderful day. This meeting is adjourned. We will meet again next week and begin to plan my son’s coronation as he begins to take over the Coven, now that he has found his mate.”

I watched as the table emptied. Only my mother and I remained sitting at the table as the witches marched back out the door one by one. As the last of them disappeared, I looked back at my mother.

“Why were you so late for the meeting?” I asked curiously.

Mom smiled and gathered her things. “As I said, I had an errand to run. However, I’d rather discuss your behavior. You need to treat the council with more patience and respect, Brady. They are here to help you just as much as you are here to help them. It is a symbiotic relationship with the elders, and you should be grateful for any little help they give you.”

I groaned at the lecture and rubbed my hand over my face. “I know. I know. I just was a little preoccupied in my mind.” I dropped my hand back down and looked up at the ceiling. “Madie went after Tristan today. I still haven’t told her everything about him or how dangerous he would be to her as my mate.”

Mom frowned, then shrugged. “Well, I’m sure she won’t be chasing off after him anymore.”

I laughed. “If only it were that simple, she would never make a promise not to. But tell me. What makes you so sure of that?”

“Oh, she just has other duties to worry about now, is all. She’s gamma now, after all. That comes with an added responsibility that she is going to have to get used to. Once she does, I’m sure you won’t have to worry about her. And we will get Tristan soon. Not even with Minerva’s help can he keep on evading us and hiding. He’ll have to come out sooner or later to face the pack.”

I smiled at my mother. “If only I had half as much faith in that as you.”

“Oh, you do. And the older you get, the more it will grow.” She leaned down and pressed a kiss to the top of my head. “Be nicer to Jasper, too. He means well and wants to see you succeed as much as I do.”

I laughed. “Alright, alright. I just wish he could talk a little faster, that is all. It’s like listening to a sloth speak when he gets going.”

Mom laughed. “You know, I think you would like that alpha in Montana. He might actually be able to tell you if Jasper actually sounds like a sloth or not.”

I laughed with her. “Oh yeah? Well then, I guess I’ll have to meet him sometime.”

“That would be wonderful. I’ll have to invite them all to visit us sometime. He has a son, you know. I’m hoping they enroll him in the academy when he’s old enough.”

I smiled at the thought. The academy was my mother’s greatest project since stepping up as Luna and Crete Coven Leader. It is her dream to see it filled with children from all over, mingling and learning together for a better future, and for more hybrid children to come along and enroll in the school. It would mean everything to her to see that happen, which meant it would mean even more to me to see her dream come true.

“I’m sure they will, Mom. And hey, if I have any kids, they could be friends with their kid!”

Mom’s smile brightened, an excited twinkle in her eye. “Now, that would be the best dream come true a mother could ever ask for. I can’t wait to see all my grandchildren making friends with children from other packs and covens.”

“Well then, I guess I’d better get right on that.” I chuckled.

“Oh, I’m sure you are already well on your way,” she chuckled back as she left the room.

I frowned, then shrugged the comment off as I reached for the book that Marlin left behind.

“May as well see what else this big book of Minerva can tell me.”
