In my mind’s eye, my tongue tasted more of her glistening skin. My hands leading the path of every inch I longed to sample before reaching the main course as I kneeled before her like the queen she was. The deity I longed to reside in the temple and worship her day and night and well into the end of my days.

The sounds I imagined falling from her lips as I feasted on her flesh sent my blood racing and in my right mind, I would know it wasn’t the place or time for these thoughts, but the bond was now well in control of me.

Her scent grew stronger around me. Far from easing the pains of the denied bond, it now seemed that The Fates were beginning to intervene, and I knew it was only a matter of time before we both collapsed into the pull that Madie fought so hard against.

Like a rubber band stretched to its limits, we would be pulled with more force than we’ve felt so far. As I came just out of my thrilling visions of my mate, I saw a bead of sweat running down her neck, and I knew she could feel the pressure just the same as me. It was only a matter of time.

“Now as for the rogue with the burned face,” Edwardo said, my mind suddenly snapped out of its euphoric state.

“Which side is the burn?” I asked. “Is he blonde? Maybe a golden furred wolf?”

Dad looked over at me with his eyebrow raised as Edwardo cleared his throat. I barely noticed Madilyn’s reaction at the mention of the burned rogue, though I could feel her eyes finally on me. I only wish I could have enjoyed her looking at me for once.

“It was his left side, and yes, he shifted into a golden wolf, though his hair was buzzed short with much of it missing where the burns carried into his scalp.” Edwardo answered.

I looked at Dad, who nodded in understanding. We both knew exactly who that rogue was, though we only learned his name when Xander had given it to us, along with the dark witch his father had been associating with.

He had cornered me in the feral battle outside of the packhouse nearly two years ago. With his claws dripping with dark magic, his intention was to corrupt anyone with magical abilities, and it appeared that I was his prime target.

I fought him off without a single scratch, though he had tried. The time of the year still held longer days, and my magic had become my saving grace that night. As I released the power of the sun’s fire, a vision had overtaken me.

It had been fast. Less than a blink of an eye. One moment I was fighting him off, doing my best not to kill him, the next my sister was at my side and we both were watching him retreat into the forest. I regretted not killing him the moment he disappeared into the darkness, because the vision I had told me that he wasn’t done with me. I unintentionally became his worst enemy and guided him back into the dark witch’s alliance.

“You both may leave now,” Dad said to Edwardo and Madie.

I was still deep in my thoughts as Madie seemed to pause beside me. I didn’t look up at her. I couldn’t in that moment. Not with all the thoughts and fears running through my mind. I couldn’t let her see the fear in my eyes.

“Catch you later, Tinkerbell,” I said to her, my gaze locked on the legs of my father’s desk.

Her scoff echoed in the air before she angrily stomped away. I knew I had made a mistake. Unintentionally, my dismissal of her set us back in our relationship, widening the gap between us once again, but my father and I had pressing matters to discuss.

As soon as the door was closed, I looked up at my father, who studied me closely.

“It’s true then?” he asked.

I turned my attention to my father and said, “I told you all that he would return. I don’t know why you would have doubted me.”

“I don’t mean about the rogue, son. We would never doubt your visions. They are stronger than your uncle’s visions have ever been. What I mean is, it’s true that Madilyn is your mate.”

I sighed as I leaned back in the chair. “I’d rather not discuss that right now. We need to focus on what Tristan is up to. If he is here, you know that Minerva has to be close by.”

Dad sighed and let his gaze move towards the closed door. “We will increase patrols. I’ll inform your sister and Xander of the sighting. And you should see if there is anything more you can find out about the witch, Minerva. She’s ancient, yet we still have found nothing about who she is or what she is planning.”

I nodded in agreement. “You might tell Liberty to take advantage of the academy’s library while she’s there. There is a good chance they have some documents that we lack with the information we need.”

Dad grunted in approval as he dug out his phone to make the call to my sister. As I stood to leave, I barely managed to turn away from my father when he stopped me.

“You need to complete that bond. At the very least mark her. I don’t need you two distracted by the mate bond’s pull. Especially not if Minerva really is lurking around.”

My shoulders tightened as I nodded before leaving the room.

He had a lot of nerve talking about completing my bond. The man who had marked my mother before ever knowing she was his mate. He had it easy compared to me. Even though Mom had her intention to reject Dad in the beginning, his mark on her helped them prevent the pains that I felt. Mom allowed him to mark her to help with the plan they had, but Madie wouldn’t be as compliant with the mark and my situation was nothing like theirs. I didn’t need him telling me what I needed to do. She’d refuse it and the last thing I needed was to force my bite onto a mate who already distrusted me so.

I turned in the direction of my mother’s office. I had decided to stop by and run through my grandmother’s book collection that was still displayed in the Luna’s office. She had some old books that had been useful in the past, and I wondered if I had possibly overlooked something that could be helpful now.

As I entered the office, I was surprised to see my mother sitting at her desk. Usually if the door was opened, it meant she was out.

She looked up at me from some document she had been looking over and smiled. “I don’t think you checked the books on the far upper right shelf, Sweetheart.”
