Now I’ve got the home. I just need to get Stella on board with our future.

I have a feeling she’s gonna be a little pissy about this too but it doesn’t matter. It’s perfect.

Just like her.

CHAPTER 6

Stella

“Did you hear what he did now?” Daffy crashes through my front door and I groan when I hear Daisy wail.

“Oops!” Daffy has the grace to look guilty. “I’m sorry. I forgot it was nap time.”

“Great. Now she’s gonna be up half the night because she’s gonna doze off early and then wake up raring to go at two in the morning.”

“I’m sorry. But I felt like you needed to know what that man did now!”

“I don’t care what he’s done.”

“You will when you hear what he’s done.”

“You’re talking in circles. What’s going on?”

“He bought a house.”

My heart stumbles to a stop for a second. Where did he buy a house? Is he leaving?

Of course he’s leaving! Come on!

The man’s gorgeous and sophisticated and mature. Sure, he’s been following me around and it feels like there’s something going on between us. A fire that roars to life every time we’re in the same room together. But we’re not a couple. We’re not together and we never will be. I’m never going to find a man who’s interested in being with a woman raising someone else’s child. It’s too much to expect. Even if he did eat me out like a voracious beast.

I sigh and turn to the bedrooms to go pick up my screaming daughter. “It doesn’t matter, Daffy. I know that he’s leaving.”

She races across the room and grabs my elbow. “No! You don’t get it! He bought a house here in town.”

My mouth drops open and I can’t stop staring at her. “Why would he do that?”

She shoots me a sparkling look, smirking. “Because he’s got his eye on a woman here in town. A woman that we both know.”

“No, he doesn’t. I swear he’s having some kind of nervous breakdown. Or midlife crisis. He told me that he quit his job. That he wanted a fresh start.”

She shrugs. “So what if he wants a fresh start. I think he wants it with you. I heard a rumor that he hired private investigators to find someone.” She pushes a finger into my chest. “You!”

“I don’t think so,” I snort.

“I do.”

“I’ve got to get Daisy.” I shuffle down the hall and open the bedroom door, wincing when I see Daisy’s gray eyes swimming with tears. “I’m sorry, baby,” I croon, picking up her sturdy little body and holding her close, my brain reeling with everything that Daffy said.

Could Max showing up here have been by design? Was he looking for me? If so, why?

I shove all that aside and sit down in the rocking chair by the crib, pulling down my nursing bra and snuggling Daisy’s warm little body to my chest.

I don’t look up when I hear Daffy in the doorway. I stroke my daughter’s petal-soft cheek, smiling when she suckles harder, her curled-up fist on my breast.

“You know that there’s something going on with you two,” she says quietly.

“I don’t know any such thing,” I insist.
