I sighed and leaned back in my chair. “It’s a way for me to get reacquainted with him and not have to talk about our issues.” Ally started to say something, but I cut her off. “I want to know him again. Talk to him again without the pressure of pain or our past getting in the way.”

Ally nodded. “I get it. I get why you would want to do that. I just want to make sure you two are being careful. Not just because he’s working with you now. But because, if he leaves again—heads out on assignment or moves—it might gut you. I don’t want to see you like that again.”

I nodded. I appreciated her concern. I had thought about that, and it worried me too. Just not enough to stop. A knock on the door interrupted our conversation.

“Speak of the devil,” Ally said when Terry appeared in my doorway.

“What?” he asked, a puzzled expression on his face.

“Nothing. What’s up?” I asked him, avoiding his question and hoping to avoid telling him that he was the topic of my and Ally’s conversation. God, I felt like a high school girl again—sitting around with my best girlfriend talking about boys. Well, just one boy in particular that had the power to turn my insides to Jell-O. And right now, his beautiful brown eyes were staring into mine.

“I gotta step out. My washer and dryer are being delivered to my new apartment. I’ll be back in early tomorrow,” Terry promised. He must have hated that he had to come and talk to me about it. He held his head down, and his eyes were full of apology.

“Where are you living these days?” I asked him playfully. I didn’t miss the way Ally’s head whipped over in my direction.

“Why? Do you want to come see it?” Terry said flirtatiously.

I shrugged, blushing a bit at the way his eyes bore into me. “I would like that.” My voice came out like velvet.

“Feel like stopping over tonight?” His words were a dare, a challenge. He didn’t think I would say yes.

I decided to surprise him. “Sure.”

Terry’s face contorted in shock, and then he schooled it back to neutral. It happened so fast that, had I not known him, I would have missed it. “Great, I’ll text you later.”

“I look forward to it,” I replied.

“All right. Well, ladies, enjoy the rest of your day.” With a wink, Terry was gone.

“Girl, I hope you know what you’re doing,” Ally said with a shake of her head.

“Oh, I have no idea,” I admitted and laughed.

“When he texts tonight, are you going to go?”

“Yeah. I would like to see where the boy lives.”

Ally just shook her head and rose from her seat. “Okay,” she said before she headed to the door.

The day dragged on from there. I was constantly checking my phone, waiting for that text from Terry. I knew why I was doing it, talking to Terry again gave me butterflies. It always had, and I feared that it always would. But Ally was right, I had to be careful.

All thoughts of being careful were gone when I finally got that text from him.
