Chapter Twenty-One

Terry

My hands shook slightly as I thought about the text I’d send to get her over here. It felt like the start of something. Like we were at the top of a steep hill, ready to plummet down, and I wasn’t sure if we were going to make it or if our speed on the way down would cause us to crash and burn.

Terry: Hey, Mia. Are you still coming over tonight?

I typed the lame words out and hit send. I waited anxiously for her to reply, butterflies filling my stomach. I felt like such a pussy. Especially when the chat bubbles began to appear.

Mia: Hey! Yes, just finished up dinner.

Dinner, huh? I wondered if she was out by herself or eating in her office. I heard she did that sometimes. I hoped she wasn’t with Bryce, although I doubted she would be.

Terry: Are you still at the office?

The chat bubbles appeared and disappeared, and I felt the wind die out of my sails. But then her reply came.

Mia: Yep, just about ready to head out.

Without hesitation, I typed out my reply.

Terry: Come to me.

My stomach somersaulted as I waited for her to reply, hoping and praying that she wouldn’t overthink it and would just come over.

Mia: Where are you?

Her simple reply had my heart soaring. I fist pumped the air, laughing at my own stupidity.

Terry: 122 Harper Ferry Way

The building where I lived wasn’t far from the office. It was downtown in a swanky part of the city. My photography career had awarded me some of the finer things in life that I hadn’t had before. I was proud of the place but nervous for her to see it all at the same time. I wondered what she would think of it.

Mia: On my way.

She was on her way. I paced the gray wood floors, running a path from the kitchen to the living room. The open floor plan would have allowed me to run circles around my apartment while I waited for her to appear, but I didn’t. Back and forth I went, waiting for the buzzer to announce her arrival.

I didn’t have to wait long. The buzzer sounded and I jumped like a fool. Even though I was expecting her, my palms were sweating. We were going to be alone together in such a confined space with no witnesses. What would happen? I couldn’t wait to find out.

I headed toward the buzzer and said, “Mia.”

“Hey, I’m here,” she said in return.

“Great, come on up, darlin’.” I intentionally dropped my accent into my words because I remembered what it did to her. I was going to be that bastard who took advantage of it.

I walked to the door and waited for her to knock. My apartment building was large, and living on the twenty-second floor allowed me a beautiful view of LA. I’d been hoping Mia would want to see it. Even better, being on the top floor provided me the rooftop access I’d paid extra to secure. When I’d bought this place, my realtor thought it was an extravagance I’d probably never use. But I had insisted and she’d made it happen, happily accepting her commission for the sale.

A knock sounded at the door. She was here. I cracked it open and there was my Mia. She was finally here.

“Hi,” she said, then she laughed nervously.

“Hi,” I croaked out. Great, Terry. Get your shit together.

“May I come in?” Mia asked, her eyes already scanning the apartment behind me.

“Yeah, sure. Come on in.” As she made her way into my home, my eyes were immediately glued to her ass. She wasn’t wearing her work clothes. No, Mia had changed out of that cute sheath dress. She was now wearing black yoga pants and a navy T-shirt. It was long but, thankfully, it still allowed me to have a great view of her ass. I smiled and studied its heart-shaped form as she entered.

“Terry,” she said over her shoulder.
