I decided it was time to bail.

“I gotta go, okay?” I said, slowly rising. He joined me.

“But you haven’t even looked at one book.” He paused. “And I’m not ready to leave you just yet.”

“I really need to leave. It’s getting late and I have a few things I need to take care of. So, if you’ll excuse me.” I watched him closely, hoping he accepted this answer.

Terry nodded. “Okay, can I see you again?”

“I’m sure we’ll run into each other from time to time.” I couldn’t promise him anything, not until I had a chance to clear my head. “See you around.” I walked away without looking at his face.

When I made it out the door, I thought I was in the clear, but seconds into heading in the direction of my apartment, I heard him calling out to me.

“What? What do you want now?” I asked as I turned around to face Terry.

“I never got to tell you my favorite fingerprint,” he said simply.

I let out an annoyed sigh. “What is it?”

He smiled and guided me out of the foot traffic on the busy sidewalk. “Turn around,” he instructed me. I did as he asked and felt his body press into mine as he pointed across the street to where Moe’s Bar was. I instantly knew. “Right in that very spot is where the magic happened all those years ago.”

“Terry, no.” I wiggled out of his arms and whirled around to face him. “I can’t right now. I need to go. Please, just let me walk away from you the way I let you walk away from me.”

He looked as if I’d just slapped him, but I didn’t care. I needed to get away and be alone with my thoughts. He didn’t move. He stood there, speechless, looking like he had just been punched in the gut. I took advantage of his silence and walked away from him and back to my place.

When I reached the apartment, I slammed the door and locked it behind me. Nothing but the bedroom had changed; everything was the same way it had been when he left for London. I still had our oversized white chair that felt like it was hugging me when I sat in it. The gray sofa, our dark wood coffee table, and the dining set we’d bought together remained. Everything was the same except for the small blue- and rose-colored accents I’d placed around the apartment.

I sighed, not being able to stand the thought of him being back in the city, knowing with the work we both did that avoiding him wasn’t going to be easy. I ran to the bedroom and locked myself away from the rest of the house, which still screamed that Terry and Mia lived here, to a place that was a purple heaven—all Mia.
