“Would it be wrong if I was?” He snickers and bumps my shoulder with his.

“Only a little bit, sir.”

He just shakes his head. “God, you sure do like to make me work for it.”

I laugh a little louder than I should, so I cover my mouth with my hands to try to stifle it. He grabs my hands and uses them to pull me to him.

“What’s so funny?”

“The fact that you think I make you work for it. I don’t know, D. I think I’ve made it pretty easy for you.”

“That part has been pretty easy, but I mean like the talking thing. Getting you to open about anything other than the surfacy shit has been hard.”

“I didn’t know you gave a shit about anything other than the surfacy shit.”

“Well, now you know.” He pauses for a moment, taking a sip of his tea before continuing. “Okay, so LA—give me the details. You’re shooting for the platform, but what does that look like? How long are you there? Can I see you?”

“Do you wanna see me after we leave this beach house?” I ask. I turn to face him so I can see how he’s reacting to my question.

“I know I’ll see you again, with Aiden and all. But you know I wanna see you more than that. I wanna see you naked and beneath me.” His eyes darken as he speaks. “I wanna be able to taste you again and again.”

I finally laugh and look away from him. “I’m pretty sure I’m always behind you. We haven’t had sex once where I’ve been in front of you.”

He winks at me and says, “No, we haven’t. But does that bother you?”

“No, it’s just different. I’m not used to that.”

“Good. I like being different from all the other guys.”

“There haven’t been that many guys, Derek.”

“Stop distracting me. Tell me the LA details, please.”

I think for a second and then reply, “It’s in two, three weeks, maybe? I’m not really sure. I’d have to look at my phone. But I’ll be there for about a week. I have some workouts to shoot. I do two a day, usually. They’re long days and long hours because some of it is broken up. We don’t just shoot for a half hour and then cut it.”

He nods, listening intently to every word I’m saying. He’s genuinely interested in what I’m saying, which is something I’m not used to. Unless someone’s in my world or a close friend, I get a lot of judgment on the work I do. It’s nice to see that Derek is different.

“I have promo shoots that I’ll have to do and maybe an interview or two to be posted later on Instagram. So yeah, I’ll be pretty busy.”

“Any chance you would be able to see me?”

“Would you like there to be?” I ask.

“I wouldn’t have asked if I wasn’t wanting there to be. I have a lot going on, and the guys don’t want me hanging out here much longer. They’ve given me my space, and they’ve respected it enough. But this little break is about to come to an end.”

“And you’ll be leaving here.”

“I’ll be leaving here,” he repeats.

We sit in silence for a bit. Nothing really gets resolved or said. We’re good at that. We just talk a lot—say a lot but don’t really come to any conclusions. I wonder if he notices.

“It’s almost five,” he remarks. “Neither one of us has gotten any sleep.”

“Nope. My parents will be up soon, I’m sure. Even though they’re retired, they still wake up early. They don’t like to waste the day.”

“You’ll have to start helping them with packing again.”

“I will. Hopefully Aiden will take care of his room and some of the other rooms for me.”
