“Let’s get a beer,” said Lucian. “No, let’s get a shot. Least we could do is buy them a shot, because they—”

“We don’t need another shot,” said Essence, who was feeling oddly relieved that she was still handcuffed to Decker. She couldn’t want to be handcuffed to him, could she? It was only that she had a feeling they needed to have a talk. Something about the way he’d touched her in the bathroom…

Maybe she hadn’t read the sex they’d had so wrong after all. Maybe… maybe they were compatible in some way. Maybe…

She looked at him, feeling an emotion swell in her. She couldn’t quite say what it was, however. It wasn’t unpleasant. She smiled at him.

He smiled at her.

“No shots,” said Laird. “We have to get back. Our girlfriend is waiting.”

“Let’s get back to Eloise,” said Lucian, beer apparently forgotten.

Leo and Laird both rolled their eyes.

Right, right, she knew this. The cerberus was dating Eloise, who was Kevin’s brother. Small town. Everyone was connected.

“Look,” said Laird, “I’m really sorry this didn’t work out.”

“Yeah, we’re sorry we made you come all this way,” said Decker.

“We live right outside of town. It’s no big deal,” said Leo. “Wish we could have gotten them off for you.”

“You tried,” said Essence.

“Thanks anyway,” said Decker.

Jeff came in.

“That was some cigarette,” said Essence.

“Yeah, sorry, I was moving some kegs,” said Jeff. “Are you guys wanting something?” He nodded at the cerberus, including them in this statement.

“Nah, we’re good,” said Lucian. “We’re going back to Eloise. Now.”

“Didn’t work?” said Jeff.

“Magic,” said Laird. “Probably going to need a spell.”

“We’re just going to wait for Hollis at this point,” said Eloise.

“Sure,” said Lucian. “Good luck.”

“YOU PROBABLY WANT to close this place,” said Decker.

“No way, it’s early,” said Jeff. He was on his phone, sitting on a stool behind the bar. “If no one comes in by 11:30, I’ll probably start putting up the chairs and stuff. Maybe close around midnight. But people will probably come in.”

“So, you don’t mind we’re hanging out?” Decker asked. Maybe he was asking because he was looking for an excuse to go back to Essence’s place or something. After that shot and the other beer, he wasn’t sure it would be safe to drive, not while in handcuffs, anyway.

“Not at all,” said Jeff.

“We should order something else,” said Essence.

“I don’t care,” said Jeff.

“Let’s go play darts or something,” said Decker. “There’s a dart room in the back, right?”

Essence gave him a funny look. “I don’t want to play darts.”
