Who’s everyone?

Taylor:

Me, Harper and Zoe

I glanced at the TV to see the female protagonist had made the movie she had been tasked with rewriting and why she had originally ended up at the Biltmore.

Me:

My movie is almost over and then I’ll get ready

Taylor:

Yay! We’ll be there in an hour

I finished watching the movie, loving the little twist to bring the two main characters together, and then tossed the blanket off and got out of bed.

In my walk-in closet, I rifled through my clothes, searching for the perfect outfit. At twenty-five, juggling textbooks and cadavers had become my daily routine, but since we were on winter break, I was looking forward to wearing something other than scrubs. I settled on a tube top, a leather skirt, and my Louboutin So Kate Booty ankle boots. Everything was black except the bottom of the boots, of course.

After doing my makeup, I ran a straightener through my black hair, spritzed my body with my favorite pineapple spray, and then grabbed my brown, black, and white plaid coat, knowing it would do very little to shield me from the winter weather outside but it was better than nothing. Plus, when we made it to the club, I didn’t want to be a hot mess on the dance floor and have pants stick to me like an extra layer of skin, so a skirt was better.

My phone buzzed with a text and I picked it up.

Taylor:

We’re downstairs

Me:

Be down in 5

Shrugging on the coat, I stuck my phone into the inside pocket along with my I.D. and credit card. It had been months since I’d been out to a club and I was honestly excited. Being in medical school was both exhilarating and exhausting, and I was looking forward to letting loose.

Descending the stairs to the first floor of my parents’ apartment, the click of my boots echoed on the marble floor with each step. As I approached the living room, the laughter of a sitcom and the faint aroma of popcorn drifted toward me. My parents were engrossed in their own world, nestled comfortably on the couch together, their attention fixated on the television screen.

“Hey, Mom. Hey, Dad,” I called out, drawing their eyes away from the show momentarily.

My mom looked over her shoulder, her eyes crinkling in a warm smile. “Heading out, sweetheart?”

I nodded. “Yeah. Some girls from school are dragging me out.”

Dad lifted his gaze from the TV. “Have fun, but not too much fun. And remember, you’re on break, not on a break from common sense.”

My father, the highly regarded criminal defense attorney he was, never let me forget his lawyerly advice, even for a night out with friends.

“Got it, Dad. I’ll be responsible.” I gave him a quick peck on the cheek.

“Just be safe, okay? Wake me when you get back home,” Mom said.

“I will, Mom,” I assured her, leaning in to give them both a quick hug. “Love you guys.”

“Love you too, sweetie,” Dad replied, patting my back before returning his attention to the TV.

Leaving the penthouse apartment, I took the elevator to the lobby, where Taylor, Harper, and Zoe awaited.

“Finally!” Taylor exclaimed, a playful grin on her face. “Ready to shake your booty?”

I smiled back. “Absolutely.”
