We stepped into the chilly city night and headed toward the subway.

“Where are we going?” I asked, wrapping my coat tighter around me.

“Pulse,” Taylor replied. “I went there with my cousin after Thanksgiving and the guys were all hot.”

“You didn’t tell me you went clubbing and met hot guys,” I sassed.

The four of us spent a lot of time together since we were all in medical school together and yet, she had failed to tell me where the hot guys were.

“We’ve been busy with school,” she said. “But trust me, we’re getting free drinks tonight.”

“I can’t wait. I haven’t been dancing in months,” Zoe stated.

“Me either,” I agreed. “I think the last time was over the summer.”

As we got closer to the station, I noticed Harper was walking a step behind, her usually vibrant energy subdued.

“Hey.” I fell into step beside her. “You’re quiet. Everything okay?”

She looked at me, her lips curving into a small smile. “Yeah, everything’s fine. Just lost in my thoughts.”

I furrowed my brow, not entirely convinced by her response. Harper was known for her infectious enthusiasm, and this quiet version of her was disconcerting.

“You sure?” I asked gently.

She nodded, her smile widening, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Yeah, really. Just need a good night out to shake off the stress of school. Let’s focus on having fun tonight.”

I nodded. We’d all been under a lot of stress before winter break, so maybe that was all it was.

As we approached the subway station, the train’s distant rumble grew louder. Harper’s laughter joined in with Taylor’s and Zoe’s, and the four of us descended the stairs toward the tracks.

CHAPTER TWO

EZRA

My three friends and I stepped out of the sports bar, still excited from the Rangers beating Washington. We strolled down the sidewalk, laughter erupting every now and then as we chatted about the game.

We’d been friends for almost four years since meeting during our first year of law school. We still tried to meet up once a week to catch a game or something, but most of us were busy with our new jobs since passing the bar. I worked as a junior associate for a elite criminal defense law firm and my hours were long and grueling, and I needed all the fun I could get when I wasn’t knee-deep in statutes and regulations.

“So, where to next, guys?” Mike asked. The night was still young, and the possibilities were endless.

Chris, ever the impulsive one, chimed in. “How about Pulse? I heard they’ve got a killer DJ tonight, and I’m in the mood to dance with a hot chick.”

“You want to go to a club?” I asked.

“Yeah, and maybe get laid tonight,” Chris stated, wiggling his eyebrows. “I haven't gotten any in far too long.”

“Speak for yourself,” Jason cut in. “I got laid last night.”

“With Rosie?” Chris teased, referring to Jason using his hand and calling it Rosie Palm.

“Fuck you.” Jason punched Chris in the shoulder. “My ex stopped by and, well … you know.”

“Anyway,” Mike said. “Are you up for a club, Ez?”

“Hell yeah. I’m down.”

The night was brisk as we navigated the few blocks toward the subway. Mike, Chris, Jason, and I descended the steps, our banter echoing through the tiled corridors.
