“Charlotte.”

“Nice to meet you, Charlotte.”

“I’ve never seen you here before. Are you new in town?” I asked.

“New enough, but not naive about the place. Do you know all your patrons?”

“Sweetclover isn’t a huge town and with the war, we don’t get many tourists anymore.”

“The damn war.” Charlie stubbed out his cigarette. “I am ready for this war to end.”

“I take it you know someone over there.”

“I do. A friend of mine signed up to help out.”

I looked around before I asked my next question.

“A hellborn or human?” I asked.

“Hellborn. He is young and foolish to believe their promises.” He put out his cigarette as he spoke.

I understood his belief. Humans had been promising us for years that we could be part of society. To help them fight the Germans in order to be a part of their society was just another empty promise.

“There are many who are joining because of that reason.” I pointed out.

“I know. So, outside of this place, what do you do for fun?”

“I don’t have much fun.” I answered.

“That’s sad. We need fun in our lives in order to enjoy life.”

“Even though times are tough.”

“Especially now. It is how we survive the bad times and enjoy the good times.” Charlie countered.

“Some are lucky enough to have that as an option, others not so much.”

“I disagree.” Charlie smiled at me as he took a drink of his beer. “Having a good time does not always mean it has to cost you money and you can always find a way to have fun.”

I looked at Charlie and tried not to smile.

“You do? This coming from the male in a very nice three-piece suit.”

“I’ll prove it to you. Allow me to take you out tomorrow.”

“What?”

“Allow me to prove to you that good times do not always cost money.” Charlie challenged me.

“You’re serious?” I asked.

“Yes. What do you say?”

I looked around the bar. Charlie was a handsome male but could I just say yes to him. On the other hand, I had not been on a date in months. I had been doing nothing but working in order to make enough to leave Sweetclover.

“Okay. I live off Elm. The apartments on the right side of the street, number 203.”

Charlie smiled at me.
