“Twelve o’clock good with you?”

“Yes.”

“Charlotte!” I looked up to find Eddie standing up giving me a dirty look. “What the hell are you doing?”

My boss William was standing at the bar, giving me a dirty look.

“I have to go.” I said before I turned and headed back to the bar.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Charlotte.”

I looked over my shoulder and gave him a nod. I moved quickly with my heels clicking on the wood floors as I moved.

“Sorry William.” I apologized as I got to the bar.

“You have tables waiting for you and you’re standing around talking to some guy.”

“We were just talking about the war.” I lied.

“Good for you, while our best customer is waiting for you to take his drink order. What the hell is wrong with you?”

William was a man who cared more about money than he did about people. He paid his staff the bare minimum and he didn’t care what Eddie did as long as he made his money. William was also a man who tended to flirt a little too much with women and sometimes females when his wife wasn’t around. He was an asshole through and through.

I walked away from William and headed for Eddie’s table.

“What can I get you, Eddie?”

“What was that about?” Eddie questioned me.

“What?”

“The guy over there. You were talking to him for a while. Why?”

“It is none of your business. Now, what can I get you?” I snapped.

Eddie grabbed my wrist and pulled me towards him. I dropped my tray and notepad as I fell forward.

“You need to understand that I get what I want and I want you. You are mine and that means you will not talk to any other man without my permission. I’m tired of you playing games with me, Charlotte. Do you understand me?”

I pulled my arm free of his grip.

“You do not own me! I am not your girl, Eddie.”

Eddie stood up as I backed away and turned away from him. He grabbed a hold of me.

“Don’t cross me!”

“Eddie!” said a voice from behind him.

The bar was quiet as everyone had stopped their conversations and were watching us. Eddie released me as he gave me a look that said it all. I walked past William trying not to cry.

“Someone else can take his damn order!” I headed outside trying to breathe.

I placed my back against the wall as I tried not to cry. I felt the tears come anyways. I hated Eddie and his belief that I belonged to him. My tears continued to flow as my anger at them grew. The door opened quickly, causing me to jump. Standing with his hat in his hand was Charlie. He walked over to me.

“Are you okay, Charlotte?” I nodded my head, afraid of how much my voice would shake. Charlie reached out to me, placing it on my back. I turned to him and ended up hugging him. Charlie held me as I tried to stop crying. “It’s okay. You’re safe.” Charlie soothed me as he rubbed my back.

The tears finally stopped flowing. I rested my head on Charlie’s chest as we stood there.
