“I’m okay.”
“Can I drive you home?” Charlie asked.
I looked up at him.
“I still have a few hours left on my shift.”
“Charlotte…that man…”
“Is an asshole, Charlie. I will not allow him to scare me.” I stepped back and wiped away my tears. “I probably look terrible.”
I pulled a small mirror from a pocket on my dress. I checked my makeup, seeing that some of it was smeared.
“You look beautiful, Charlotte.”
I smiled at Charlie.
“Thank you.”
“Any time.”
I gave him a kiss on the cheek before I headed inside. I beelined for the bathroom. It took a few minutes to get the black mascara off my skin. My pale skin around my eyes were puffy and red. There was nothing I could do about that. I checked my hair, seeing it was better than I thought. I stepped out of the bathroom to find William’s tall skinny figure standing in the hall.
“What are you doin’ Charlotte?” He demanded of me.
“Eddie had no business…”
“Stop right there, girl. Eddie can do as he pleases. If he wants you serving him, that’s what you will do. He wants you at his table…”
“NO! I will serve him drinks but nothing else.” I argued.
“You’re being a damn fool! He wants you to go home for the night.”
“William…”
“You made a choice to act like a little girl, throwing a fit, these are the consequences!”
I gave William a dirty look as I moved towards the bar to get my purse.
“When you come back I expect you to fall in line and do your job!” William yelled as I walked away.
I grabbed my purse from behind the bar. I looked over at Eddie to see one of the other waitresses standing next to him, flirting with him. Eddie looked at me giving me a smug look.
She could deal with being used as his arm candy all she wanted. I wouldn’t. I walked outside to find Charlie leaning against the wall.
“About that ride?” He smiled at me.
“You knew William was going to send me home?”
“I heard what they said and you didn’t let me tell you.”
I tried not to smile at him.
“Fair enough.”
Charlie held out his arm to me and I slid my arm through his. We walked down the busy downtown streets until we reached a deep red Ford Deluxe. Charlie opened the door for me and I climbed into the car. He ran around the car and got into the driver’s seat.
