I also had no idea where I was going to go. I need a place where I could be on my own. Big cities were the best place to hide but also had a higher death rates for hellborns. It also costs more to get by in those cities. Being in the middle of nowhere would mean I would pay less for my bills and I could hide away a little better. I could spend a year or two doing that before I moved back into a city. Finding a job in a smaller setting could be more difficult but the idea of a quieter existence and no individuals like Eddie to deal with was a bonus I couldn’t dismiss...

I began to plan my move. I wanted to save more money if I didn’t let Eddie get to me. I could make at least another hundred dollars in the next two weeks. From time to time, I helped a couple of my elderly neighbors with cleaning. It didn’t make me much more than a couple of dollars but every penny counted. If I did this right, I could leave Sweetclover in two weeks. All I had to do was survive the next two weeks. I looked at my clock to see that it was already late in the morning. I needed to have a quick breakfast and get dressed for the day. Charlie would be here in a couple of hours.

I made a quick breakfast before I got dressed. I found my emerald green bathing suit. It tied on the back of my neck and had a sweetheart style on top. The suit hugged my body and hit me high on my thighs. I picked out a simple green dress that was a couple shades lighter than my suit. The dress had small white flowers. It had a small v-neck with an a-line to the dress and hit me at my knees. I completed the look with a pair of my black heels. I kept my makeup light with just lipstick. I pulled my hair back in a loose ponytail. I grabbed my straw purse from the closet, placing a rolled towel, a small mirror, and my lipstick inside. I was finishing checking my outfit in the mirror when there was a knock on my door.

I walked through my apartment and paused before I opened my door. Standing in a pair of slacks with a short sleeve white button-down shirt was Charlie. His hair was slicked back. He had a smile on his face.

“Hi.” Charlie greeted me.

“Hi.”

“You look beautiful.”

“Thank you.” I replied as I stepped outside. Charlie held out his arm to me. I took his arm as we walked to his car. Charlie opened the door and helped me climb in. He shut the door behind me and ran around the car. I placed my purse at my feet as Charlie climbed into the car. He started the car and began to drive away. “So, are you planning to tell me where we are going?” I asked.

Charlie glanced over at me.

“I found this place a couple of weeks ago and, from what I can tell, few people know about it. It is a bit of a drive but it’s worth it.”

“I am now intrigued.”

“You should be. It’s beautiful and something I have never seen anywhere else.” Charlie’s voice was full of awe.

Charlie pulled away from the curb and headed towards the highway.

“Where are you from?” I asked.

“When I was human, I was born in Washington. As a vampire, I work doing odd jobs and traveling the world as much as I can.”

“And of all the places in the world you chose Sweetclover?” I asked.

“It chose me, actually.”

“How did that happen?”

“I was on my way east when my car broke down. It took a week to get the parts I needed and I just made the decision to stay for a while. I found a job at a company who is shipping supplies to soldiers and doesn't ask a lot of questions.” he explained.

“How long do you plan to be here?”

“I don’t know. I have already made contact with the hellborns within Sweetclover.” Charlie shrugged his shoulders. “What about you?”

“I’ve been here for close to two years. I’m originally from California.”

“How did you end up here?” Charlie asked me.

“I needed to make a move because humans were noticing that I wasn’t aging as they were. I wanted a place smaller than Los Angeles. I have spent several years bouncing up and down the West coast and wanted new scenery and landed here.”

There was a pause in the conversation as Charlie continued to drive us.

“How was the rest of your night?”

I paused. I didn’t know what to say. Charlie gave me a glance.

“Eddie called me last night.”

“Let me guess what he had to say. He threatened your job if you didn’t go out with him.”

“It was more you will meet me or else.”
