About the time the caterers arrived to prepare the food, I went upstairs, took a nap, and then showered and started to get ready for the party. I tried to change my mood, but not hearing from Ezra was really messing with my head. I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed him and I just wanted one more chance.

I slipped into a shimmering silver dress that clung to my curves just right. The icy color matched the winter theme of the party, but my mind was far from festive. I curled my black hair, letting loose waves cascade down my shoulders, and applied my makeup perfectly. After spraying my pineapple spray all over myself, I took a deep breath and decided it was time to head down and make an appearance.

When I opened my bedroom door, laughter and the tinkling of glasses grew louder. With a fake smile on my lips, I walked down the stairs and was greeted by the spectacle of glittering lights and joyful faces. My father’s employees mingled, champagne glasses in hand, and the holiday spirit was alive and well. Everyone seemed to be having a good time.

I weaved through the crowd, smiling and exchanging pleasantries with the people I knew. My phone buzzed in my hand, and my heart leaped, hoping it was Ezra. Disappointment sank in as I saw it was just a notification for one of the apps I’d ordered clothes from.

Needing a bit of fresh air, I headed toward the terrace, where the winter air provided a break from the bustling crowd. The night sky had a chill to it that nipped at my exposed shoulders.

“Beautiful night, isn’t it?”

I turned to find Ezra, hands casually tucked into his pockets, a faint smile playing on his lips.

CHAPTER SIX

EZRA

About a year and a half ago

My palms wouldn’t stop sweating as I rode the elevator up to the fourteenth floor. What was I thinking when I applied to intern at Adler, Barrington, & Lockwood? I hadn’t seen Mr. Adler since the morning I’d left his apartment after waking up in Logan’s bed alone. Even though nothing sexual had happened between us that night, I had felt like I had been caught doing the walk of shame. Mr. Adler must have spoken with Logan before he’d seen me that morning because he gave me a sad smile as though he knew my heart was breaking, and then he wished me well in Arizona.

That was six years ago.

As the elevator dinged and the doors opened, I took a deep breath to calm myself. The receptionist gave me a polite nod as I approached.

“Good morning. Ezra Rosen. I’m here for an interview with Mr. Adler,” I stammered, my nerves betraying me.

She checked her schedule, then gestured toward a plush waiting area. “Take a seat. He’ll be with you shortly.”

As I waited, I grabbed a magazine and flipped through it. I wasn’t reading a single word or really noticing the pictures because all I could think about was how crazy I was to want to work for my ex’s father. It wasn’t as if Logan and I had ended on bad terms, but after the night when I had held her while we slept, I hadn’t spoken to her since. We’d agreed it was better to cut off contact and to move on, though I never truly did. I’d dated people at Arizona State and while in law school, but no one had compared to Logan Adler, and I was certain no one ever would.

“Mr. Rosen?”

I looked up to see a man in a suit calling my name. I stood. “Yes.”

“Mr. Adler is ready for you.”

I followed him through a maze of cubicles until we reached a corner office. The man waved me to step through the doorway and Mr. Adler looked up from his desk with a warm smile.

“Ezra, please, come in,” he said and the other guy disappeared. Mr. Adler hadn’t changed much, still exuding an air of confidence that commanded respect. He stood, held out his hand, and we shook. “Please have a seat.”

“Thank you, sir,” I replied and sat across from him.

He returned to his leather high-back chair and leaned back, studying me for a moment. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it? How’ve you been?”

I cleared my throat. “Good, thank you. Law school’s been a challenge, but I’m learning a lot.”

“It surprised me to see your name come across my desk as a summer intern applicant.”

I swallowed. “I’ve always wanted to work for the best.”

He grinned. “Trying to butter me up?”

My eyes widened, and I shook my head. “No, sir. I?—”

He chuckled. “I’m teasing, but I have to say the reason I was surprised was because I had no idea you wanted to become an attorney. You had never mentioned it before.”

I nodded slowly and took a deep breath. “I didn’t know either until I had to pick a major. I’ve always admired you and would like to be someone who can provide for my future family like you do for Mrs. Adler and Logan.”
