He leaned forward, his expression thoughtful. “Well, Ezra, I appreciate the honesty. Family is important, and it’s commendable that you want to provide for yours.”

“Thank you.”

He steepled his fingers and regarded me for a moment. “So, you’re interested in the internship. Any particular reason you chose criminal defense?”

I took a moment to compose my thoughts, realizing the significance of his question. “Criminal defense has always fascinated me. It’s not just about the law; it’s about standing up for those who may not have a voice, ensuring that justice is served even when the odds are stacked against someone on trial. I believe everyone deserves a fair chance and a competent defense.”

He nodded, a glint of approval in his eyes. “Good answer. I value dedication and a keen mind in my team. But here’s the thing, Ezra. I’m willing to offer you the intern position for the summer, but first I need to discuss something with you.”

“Of course. What is it?”

“I don’t want Logan to know. She’s in medical school, and she doesn’t need any distractions.”

I nodded slowly. It wasn’t like I would call her out of the blue and tell her I was working for her father, but I understood what he was getting at. “Yes, sir. I won’t say anything.”

He leaned back in his chair, satisfied. “Good. I’ll let HR know you’ll be starting this summer.”

Present Day

Logan sucked in a breath as she turned around to face me. “You’re here.”

“Yeah.”

“But …” She looked me up and down, taking in the red suit jacket I was sporting with a green tie and black slacks. “How’d you know about the party?”

“Your father invited the entire office.”

She blinked. “You work for Adler, Barrington, & Lockwood?”

“I do.” I felt a drop of rain on my forehead, but nothing was going to break me away from the moment.

“Since when?”

I took a step closer to her. “I interned there before my third year of law school and then he promoted me to junior associate this past fall after I passed the bar.”

“I … You’re a lawyer?”

I snorted a small laugh. “Yeah, don’t seem so surprised.”

“No, I mean, I just had no idea that was what you wanted to do.”

“It’s not a bad gig. Your father makes me work super late sometimes, but the pay is good for a junior associate.”

“I can’t believe my dad didn’t tell me.” She crossed her arms over her chest.

“We had a deal,” I stated, taking another step closer and faintly smelling pineapple. This time, I was close enough to touch her and all I wanted to do was take her in my arms and kiss her again.

She blinked. “A deal?”

“Your dad didn’t want you to know because he thought it would cause some sort of distraction for you. I agreed because we hadn’t spoken since the morning I’d left for college when you ghosted me.”

She hung her head. “Sorry about that.”

“Hey.” I lifted her chin with my finger. The raindrops were becoming heavier. “We were kids then, but what about last night? You left without saying goodbye.”

“No.” She shook her head. “I went back to find you, but couldn’t. I searched everywhere.”
