Page 15 of Loving February

I haven’t left Connall’s side or bed since we got home two weeks ago. This morning is the first time I’ve found myself alone in months, really. Since we started traveling. I’m at my apartment, packing more clothes. I don’t know who I’m kidding. I’m never moving back in here. I look in the fridge for a bottle of water, but instead find old Chinese food. Whoops. I move to toss it when a wave of nausea washes over me. Again. For the third time this week, I find myself on my knees praying to the porcelain gods to deliver me from this evil when it dawns on me. I haven’t had a period since before Connall and started having sex. Okay. Okay. Calm down. It’s probably just late.

I clean up, using a brand-new toothbrush to brush my teeth. I grab my packed bag and head down to the car. My driver, Colin, hops out and opens the door for me after taking my bag.

“Where to, Miss February?” he asks, chuckling like he does every time he says my name. It makes me sound like a centerfold.

“The pharmacy on Linwood, please.”

“No problem. We’ll be there in a jiffy.”

In the pharmacy, I buy a pregnancy test and a bottle of water. I guzzle the water and pee on the stupid stick. The quickness with which that plus sign pops up surprises me. I take a deep breath. I’m going to be the mother of Connall’s baby. I smile and put the test back in the box and put it in my purse. I take my water out to the car and have Colin head to the office. Since we’ve been home, I’ve introduced Connall to my moms, and he told his brothers about us.

I’m not at my desk for ten minutes when a tall, leggy blonde comes in from the elevator bank.

“Can I help you?” I ask.

“I’m looking for Connall Ahearn.” The way she says it lets me know this is not going to be a normal interaction.

“Do you have an appointment?” I ask, knowing full well she doesn’t.

“I don’t need one. I’m his fiancée.”

I know it’s not professional, but I can’t help it. I burst out laughing. I mean the kind of laugh that could wake the dead.

“I’m sorry could you repeat that?”

“Are you stupid or something? I’m his fiancée. Is he in?”

“He is, but I’m his girlfriend. He never mentioned you.”

“Feb?” Connall asks, coming out of his office.

“Yes?” I ask.

“Caroline?”

“Oh, you do know her?”

“I mean, yeah.”

“Well, your fiancée would like a word with you,” I say, barely able to contain myself. A few months ago, I would have been so self-conscious to be anywhere near this woman, but Connall has shown me that I have nothing to worry about. Nothing.

“February, I swear, I was never engaged to this woman.”

“How can you say that, Connall? We…”

“Dated for a few months six years ago. What are you doing here?”

“I want you back.”

“I don’t want you back. I’m seeing someone.”

“This… person?” she asks, gesturing to me.

“Yes,” I say.

“I wasn’t speaking to you.”

“You should leave, Caroline.”
