Nodding, he agreed, “It’s hard to dismiss when you keep saying it.”

“Nobody cares about age. When it comes to Numbers, it’s not just about what we see with our eyes, it’s also about our other senses. When I touch you here.” She placed her finger in the dimple. “Despite your hard work, I can sense a life filled with laughter and smiles.”

She pursed her lips as she closed her eyes. Entranced, he watched her breathe in. She breathed in, her eyebrows twitched, her mouth opened, and her body relaxed like it was letting out a long sigh.

“You smell like you have had a punishing day. The anger is bitter, the pain is deep and soft, and the annoyance is sharp.” She counted off his emotions easily. Licking her lips, she continued. “Cain’s scent is also present, but it’s faint, as if you weren’t near him for long.” She paused, her face falling into a broad smile. “Karen and Sylva,” Harper smirked, her full, plump lips forming a killer smile. “Sylva was very happy.”

“Yes, he is always,” Nick replied, watching her chronicle his day as if she were reading his diary.

“And then there’s amusement and …” Harper interrupted, blushing fiercely. He was able to gather what she had picked up on as she blushed— the effects of their kiss.

With a groan, he noted, “It’s extremely unfair that you’re able to smell me whenever I’m aroused.”

She ducked her head and murmured, “I’m sorry.”

He replied, “Don’t be,” as she leaned forward. Almost as if he had drawn her in with his scent.

She leaned in closer to him, and he was captivated by her gaze. The olive green in the centre burst out until it blended into a light brown colour, as striking and unique as she was.

He warned, “Harper.” He had been holding back, but she kept invading his space, pushing his boundaries.

She couldn’t push him like this. He would snap.

With her lips in contact with his, she whispered, “It’s okay.”

Despite his desire to deepen the kiss, he did not. For a long time, he had been waiting for her to make a move. He almost thought he had blown it after that impulsive, punishing kiss he had given her earlier.

Putting her knee between his legs, she straddled his thigh as her leg slipped onto his chair. Nick was unable to hold back, and one of his hands slipped to the back of her thigh. He cursed the fact that she was wearing trousers. Her warm skin and smooth texture were inaccessible to him.

Holding her hip, he brought her onto his thigh with his other hand. She made a sound of surprise when he tugged her tight to his thigh and moaned as her sensitive flesh pressed against his firm thigh. Her tongue duelled with his, and her lips were hot and firm on his, no hesitation.

When her eyelids fluttered, and she moaned, he couldn’t help but think there was something so sensual about her. Suddenly, Nick gripped her leg tighter and pulled her against him. They were acting like teenagers, but he was feeling better than he ever had before.

If touching her over her clothes caused him to feel this way, and so strongly, he could imagine how it would feel when they were naked and locked together in bliss. It almost made him want to deny what she made him feel because it struck a chord of fear in his heart.

It was impossible to predict how he would feel in four or even eight months if he felt this way now. His violently protective heart wanted to bundle her up and never let go.

His thoughts turned dark, and he accidentally buried his hand in her thigh. A muffled sound escaped her, and he immediately apologised. “Sorry,” he murmured.

She sat back in her chair, breathing heavily. He kept his hands on her. He didn’t want to give up the connection yet and let his head fall forward. “Will you stay?” he asked.

Nick expected her to say no, but he was pleasantly surprised by her response.

In a firm voice, she replied, “Yes.”

She leaned back fully in the chair, tipping it back onto two legs. Having resigned himself to another night with a stiff cock, Nick poured them both a drink. At this point, he was irritated by the sheet.

He wouldn’t mention his need. Their relationship should have an equal balance of power that makes her feel safe, not pressured.

Having witnessed Karen’s relationship and seen the balance of power tilt solely in Jerry’s favour, Nick was extremely cautious about his lovers. It was important to him that he was careful about the power he wielded and the lovers who coveted him solely for the thrill of that power.

The daft females wanting a Numbers attention would race to fill his bed if they thought they could get close to one. There was never time to commit, not because he wanted it that way. He had gotten used to doing everything alone over the last few years.

He had never been attracted to anyone that he would want to spend the rest of his life with, but with Harper, things were different.

“Thank you,” he sighed. He was relieved she would be with him and was thankful none of his team came to his house.

When his phone rang, he jolted into action. When he first saw Harper in his kitchen, he threw the keys and phone on the side table. Then, he rushed over to her when she smacked the glass onto the floor.
