There was the whizz of the sprinkler, the snip of scissors, and the hum of birdsong. It was too peaceful for what had just happened. He closed his eyes for a moment, gulping.

“In my garden, I have an order waiting on Skype…” she said, interrupting his thoughts.

He ordered, “Cancel it,” at which point she growled. He rubbed his eyes. “Harper, please listen to me! I need you to be safe. Something has happened. Just get to my home, and I will be there as soon as possible. Don’t answer the door if you hear or smell someone that you’re not familiar with. Be prepared to claw him. The person who is loose is not sane.”

“Okay,” she replied in shock. “Karen? Sylva?” she asked, causing his heart to clench.

There was something special about her, concerning herself with his family’s safety when she may be in danger. Females he had dated before wouldn’t care about that at all, only their own safety. Karen was sometimes considered an unfortunate charity case.

Leaning his head on the phone, he wanted to express his feelings for her, but he didn’t have time. In a calm voice, he said, “I’m about to call her now. I’m confident that she’ll be in good hands with Samiel. I wanted to ensure that you were safe.”

“You did?” She asked, perhaps surprised that he had called her. “You better call Karen,” she advised with a smile.

“Then go and be safe for me.”

“See you soon,” she promised.

The moment he hung up the phone with her, he turned everything off and dialled Karen.

“Uncle Nick! Hello, I was about to call you. I can’t believe they found him. Who is it?”

“I only have a few minutes,” he said, walking down the hallway after opening his door. “Are you okay?”

“Uncle…”

“No!” he shouted, and some heads snapped up from their desks to give him shocked looks. Karen’s breath caught in her throat, shocked by his sudden shout. He groaned, lowered his voice, and whispered, “Just tell me you’re safe, okay?”

“Ye-yes,” she stuttered. “Samiel’s here, he’ll keep us safe, and Clara just got here.”

Covering his mouth with his hand, he nodded. “Okay, honey, that’s all I needed. Now I have to get going.”

“Alright, be safe, please?” she asked softly. He made an affirmative noise and hung up.

He jogged to catch up with Drey and Mallen on the stairs. He yelled, “I’ll catch a ride with you.” They slowed down. He picked up the pace to close the gap.

A frown spread across Drey’s face, and he cocked his head. “Are you sure about that? The male we have is yours. We can handle it if you want,” he offered.

He responded with firmness, so they knew he wasn’t going anywhere. “Yes, I know, and that’s why I’m going.”

“All right. I’ve got everyone moving to safety.”

Drey continued to walk without asking any more questions. Mallen was a wall of fury, and he wondered if he’d have to stop him from killing Greg and other lunatic who was murdering people across their land-though, maybe not the escaped lunatic.

He didn’t want Greg alive because of their history together. No. He wanted Greg to experience the harsh prison conditions for the rest of his life. He had put Drake through terrible suffering and who knows what else.

When they got to the hub’s front door, he noticed people and Numbers leaving. Everyone was in a hurry but moving calmly and efficiently toward the exit. Clearly, their drills worked; everyone was getting to safety, and the crowd was calm.

It was raining when they got outside, and a distant rumble of thunder could be heard. The rain and thunder signified the urgency of the situation and served as an ominous reminder of the danger they faced.

Drey rushed to get his Jeep but stopped when he noticed Katie standing alone. “Katie?”

“Yeah!” she said nervously, as always, she was a bundle of nerves.

“Get to the gym. Take my Jeep,” Drey said.

“Noah went home. I was planning on going home, but one of your drivers usually picks me up,” she explained.

“Then take my Jeep and get to safety.” Katie began to shake her head as he handed her the keys. “Take them,” Drey growled. Katie paled and clutched the keys tightly, nodding rapidly. An intense snarl emanated from Mallen, drawing Drey’s attention. “Yeah, yeah, I’m coming.”
