Nick would need something to distract him once he left the prison or wherever Greg was being held. It wouldn’t be healthy for him to sit on his own after visiting Greg and let whatever Greg said run through his mind like poison.

After running around to the front, she realised Nick’s Jeep was still there and sighed in relief. However, she was surprised to see Perdy’s Jeep in the hub since she had assumed she would spend time enjoying Drake’s freedom.

She was most surprised by Apollo’s scent as she entered the hub. The moment Perdy and Apollo were together, it was like fireworks going off.

She made her way up the stairs. Upon reaching Nick’s floor, she greeted everyone she passed. Unfortunately, she didn’t find him where she expected. When she checked down the hall, he wasn’t in his meeting room or at his desk. When Drew saw her, he waved his hand to get her attention.

“Yes?” she asked.

His eyes twinkled as he assessed her as if he was uncovering everything about her and Nick, as he said, “He’s up on the Alpha’s floor.”

“Ah! Thank you,” she replied.

Turning quickly as she made her way up the stairs to the Alpha floor, she was always intrigued by the mix of scents. As well as containing the territorial scent of Alphas, it also emanated the sweet scent of a baby.

It also had a soft, yet steely scent that was a product of the females who put up with the Alphas. She even caught her own scent mingling with Nick’s.

Damn! It had gotten stronger.

She entered the large meeting room, where they all gathered silently. A wave of nerves overtook her as she shuffled her feet. No one answered when she knocked on the door, so she tentatively opened it. When everyone turned their attention to her, she stopped.

“What?” she asked. There was a sense of heaviness in the air, as if every person had taken a breath and was waiting to let it out.

Perdy cleared her throat. “Would you be willing to give me blood?”

Immediately, she took a step back, bumping into the door and jerking as she felt it behind her. Her mind flashed back to the image of phantom arms holding her down and piercing her veins, the slash of a whip cracking through the air.

“That was tactless!” Nick snapped, cursing aloud before approaching her.

When she shuddered, he tucked her into his chest, enveloping her in his comforting scent.

“Sorry,” Perdy murmured.

Drey was quiet, which Harper appreciated. He could wait if he had questions.

There must be a reason for the request, she told herself before she managed to ask in a shaky voice, “What’s wrong?”

Nick reached behind her and shut the door, securing her inside with their shocked faces.

Perdy blew out a breath. “There were some anomalies in my blood. Whenever my age was checked, there was always something wrong with it. According to the files I’ve recovered, the ageing test placed me below my actual age after ten years,” Perdy said.

“I don’t understand. How old are you?”

This question seemed to be the source of tension.

“I don’t know. There was no mention of my age, birthday, or even how long I spent at that site, but it should be in my mid-twenties.”

“And what is your age?” Harper asked again.

Drey was trying to hide his annoyance. He wrinkled his nose with a confused and pissed look.

“There has been no change in the past three years. I haven’t aged,” Perdy replied quickly as if that would somehow lessen the shock.

The only thing she could do was blink, numb, and somewhat stunned. “In other words—” Harper hesitated. “Have you stopped aging?”

As Perdy winced, she felt dizzy. “At the very least, slowly. It is so slow that I cannot tell any difference.” Perdy’s chin lifted. “There are other things I found.”

“What does that mean? Is there a reason why everyone seems to look like they would rather be in their graves?” Harper asked.
