“Yes. In the end, Nick’s persistence paid off. The fact that he was attracted to me was a little startling, but the benefit of being friends with him was more than he knew. Several conversations led to tea, and before I knew it, we were eating together regularly. After many conversations and meals together, Nick and I decided to take our relationship to the next level.”

“He’s good for you,” Drey said, his chest puffed with pride as he watched her stand strong with her mate. “You look good, and he looks happy.”

“Thank you,” she said sincerely.

She had received all the support she needed from Drey. Every time she felt low, he was there for her. He patiently allowed her to gradually emerge from her shell over time rather than yanking her out too soon.

“I’m going to find him,” she said.

Knowing whether this would be a barrier between her and her mate was important to her. They had been constructing a tiny corner of paradise, and it was possible that she had unintentionally damaged it.

Nick had enough time to make a hot drink.

“I think it is best that you go with him to see Greg,” Perdy said suddenly.

She stopped, frozen with her hand on the door. She asked Perdy how she knew that was the reason she was there. Perdy shook her head and replied, “I know Nick. He will be there as soon as Greg is awake and moving around.”

“I think he wanted to take care of it on his own,” she rasped, her chest aching at the thought of him swimming in pain and having no one to reach out to.

One of Perdy’s eyebrows slid into her hair, the other dropped low. “And you?”

“It’s my intention to go anyway,” she told Perdy, smiling widely.

Perdy relaxed, and her lips kicking up, a sparkle coming into her eyes as her head tilted as if Perdy heard things she couldn’t. “Good. These males think they know everything and don’t need help.” Perdy scoffed.

“I heard that,” grumbled Drake, who had just entered the room.

Perdy grinned, but her grin soon turned into a squeak of surprise as he rushed her, throwing her into the air with his strong arms.

It was clear they were playing when Perdy snapped at the air above him with sharp fangs. “I knew you would. You were meant to hear, you crazy male,” she replied with amusement.

A small grin spread across Mallen’s face as he laughed and shook his head at her antics.

The look on Apollo’s face said he would savagely strike Drake if he bruised her even slightly. Why was Perdy so unaware of this?

She chose to slip towards the door at that moment. A soft throat clearing caught her attention just as her fingers touched the door. Seeing Jennifer, she motioned them into the hall. While she frowned, she quietly opened and closed the door and followed Jennifer.

“I thought I could provide you with a human perspective,” Jennifer replied as they walked past the Alpha offices to Jennifer’s desk.

“Okay.”

Taking a seat at her desk, Jennifer leaned back. “I am still in shock, and I knew I had a mate. Nick might have suspected you were mates, but to be told he would have to live forever…it’s a lot to swallow.”

“Yes, it is.”

“He might have thought he’d only have thirty to fifty years left to live, but he’s suddenly not aging. Will he be able to explain this? When will he explain it? Does he tell lies? It is possible that he is thinking about all of these questions.

“There’s no doubt that all of you are happy to have your mates around. But, while we are still humans, we could also be something else. The answer to all of this is that it’s not as simple as being happy that we will be together for the rest of our lives.”

Her cheeks flushed, realising she should have thought of all those things. Nick’s head must be spinning, and hers was, so she already knew how different she was. “I understand,” she agreed.

Jennifer rubbed her forehead. The stress lines around her eyes deepened. “No, you don’t. He has friends and colleagues. I’m not sure if he has any other family, but he’ll watch them all die just as I will watch my mother die.” Jennifer suddenly sobbed, burying her face in her hands.

Mallen appeared and gathered her in his arms.

She felt her stomach clench and chest tighten painfully as she crept to the stairs, leaving them alone with Jennifer’s grief.

With a new understanding, she promised to give Nick time to think. Five minutes wasn’t long enough. Until he was ready to discuss it, she wouldn’t bring it up.
