“And well deserved, too,” Dr. Roberts added as he looked about the room. “Please excuse me.”

We stood in silence for a moment.

“Thanks,” she scrunched up her face, “for not saying anything about…”

“It was dark. I couldn’t see your face, anyway.” I winked, and she smiled with a nod. “So, what kind of a doctor are you?”

“Psychologist.” She lifted a shoulder. “Might seem a little funny, given what you witnessed out there.”

“Why?” I tilted my head to one side. “Aren’t psychologists people too?”

“Yeah,” she gave a little laugh, “I guess we are.” She seemed lost in thought for a moment, and I knew there had to be a story about what happened out there. It seemed to be weighing on her. “I worked in Washington and just recently moved over here to work at Shadows.”

“You were working at our headquarters?”

“I was, yes. I worked with some of the soldiers who had come back from Afghanistan.”

Interesting.

“What had you make the jump over here?” I wanted to spend more time with her, so I kept the conversation going. I felt comfortable with Ivy. We were both newbies here, and it gave us a connection. I could see that the others occasionally glanced our way and appreciated that they were giving us a little space.

“I just needed a change.” She shifted her wine glass to the other hand as though nervous about something. “It will take a little getting used to, though. You know, all the trees, and wind, and wood.” She fumbled with her words, and I hid my laugh.

“Well, I’m glad I’m not the only new person here.”

“Yeah.” She looked around and spotted Cole’s wife, who gave her a thumbs up, but she quickly looked away.

Something hit me, and I looked back down at her.

“Will you be working with me and my team or with Blackstone?”

“Blackstone.”

“Good.”

“Good?” Her perfectly arched eyebrow rose, and I found myself lost in her features again. She really was a beautiful woman.

“Mhmm,” was all I offered, and she squinted like she was trying to read my mind.

“I’m not sure if I should be offended or not.” She chuckled into her glass and took a long sip. She stood tall and pushed her shoulders back as if she’d found her confidence, and she seemed to enjoy our banter, which was even more attractive.

“Or not.” I played along but found myself steering the conversation in a different direction. “Did you leave a lot of people behind when you moved here?”

“What brought you here to Shadows?” She pivoted around the question while she rested her wine glass against her breast and peered up at me. “Tired of living in a land of dust and Taliban?” she threw back.

“Ah, I hit a sore spot. Okay.” I lightly laughed, and her smile twisted as she tried to hide that I’d hit the nail on the head.

“Or maybe it’s time for you to answer a question, Major.”

“You don’t like me on the other side of the chair?” I challenged, and something flickered across her face, but before I could read it, she looked away. I wanted to reach out and tilt her chin to look at me, to keep her gorgeous eyes on me, but I forced my hand down.

“Beckett,” Logan spotted me as he came into the room, “I see you’ve met Dr. Knight.”

“Yes,” I nodded, “we were just getting to know one another.” I gave her a glance, and she returned it. There was a strange sense of tug and pull between us, and I found it rather fun.

“Great.” Cole looked around. “Let me introduce you to my team, and then we’ll get you settled in your room. Wake up is zero-five-hundred, and we start training at zero-five-thirty.” He glanced at Ivy. “Your things arrived this afternoon, Dr. Knight. I had Mark and Mike leave everything in your office.”

“Oh, good. I appreciate that.” She glanced down the hall like she was planning her retreat once Logan pulled me away.
