“If you need anything at all, you know who to ask.” Cole smiled at her.

“Will do.” She stepped away, and I followed Logan to meet the others.

Team Blackstone soon put me at ease. It was like I was back with my team in Afghanistan. They were easy, light, and even when things fell silent, they were comfortable with it.

Mark seemed to be the life of the party and had no problem sharing stories about their adventures in Mexico. Keith was the quiet one, but he seemed to enjoy sharing what kind of weapons and equipment they used.

“I have a friend who knows how to find anything you want,” Keith informed me. “If you need anything, let me know, and she’ll find it.” I noticed Mike gave John a knowing look and wondered what that was about.

“Okay, good to know.” I got a rush at the idea of stepping back into combat. I craved the Army life, and it seemed these guys did, too. Cole was mostly all business until his wife Savannah came over.

“So, Ty,” she leaned into Cole, and his face immediately softened as he kissed her head affectionately, “what do you think of Shadows?”

“He’s seen the entry way and living room,” Mike teased. “Don’t be coming over here and doing your wifey thing.”

“It’s nine p.m., Mike. Do you know where your wife is?” She gave him a pointed look, and his face morphed into excitement.

“That’s right, the kids are gone! Whoop! Tell the wife I’m on the way.” He shoved his beer into Mark’s hand and whisked out the door while the rest of us laughed.

“I know I’m gonna like it here. Thanks, Savannah.” I nodded politely. “It’ll just take some getting used to.”

“I would imagine.” Mark nodded. “When was the last time you slept in a real bed?”

“It’s been a while.”

“After training tomorrow, we’ll give you a tour of the house and grounds, and then we’ll walk you through our next mission.” Cole read something off his phone as he spoke.

“When do we ship out?”

“We’re on call. That’s all we know.”

“Can’t he have one night off?” Savannah scoffed. “I’m sorry, Ty.”

“It’s all I know.” I shrugged. “It’s my comfort zone.”

“Well, we’re going to break you of that,” she smiled, “starting with, I see you’ve met Ivy—”

“And that’s enough from you, little lady.” Mark pulled her from Cole’s side and pushed her on her way.

“What?” She laughed all the way back to Sloane.

“They have the best intentions, but they love playing matchmaker.” Mark pointed at someone who had just come into the room. As she approached us, Mark put a hand on her shoulder. “Please intervene with that one,” he begged and pointed to Savannah.

“Provoke her?” She gave him an evil grin. “On it!”

“I swear to God,” Mark chuckled, “they’ll be the ones to take me down, not the Cartel.”

“That’s his wife, Mia.” Cole filled me in.

John came up and joined us, adding his chuckle to show he’d overheard Mark’s comment.

“Speaking of the Cartel, why don’t you fill me in a little more on Los Débiles.”

Cole looked over at me with a strange expression then glanced at Mark.

“Yeah, all right, let’s do this.” He waved at me to follow, and John leaned in.

“You’re going to fit in well with us.”
