“Hey, boss?”

“Mm?” I flipped through the US news app on my phone as I tried to find anything that might have to do with the drop-off that day.

“You know what’s weird?” Filippo muttered from the driver’s seat. “I really don’t know that much about you.”

“Your point?”

“Like, do you have any family?”

“No.”

“Everyone has family.”

“I don’t.”

“You mean, like, you don’t anymore?”

I lowered my phone, tired of his voice. “Do you have family, Filippo?”

“I do. Two sisters and three brothers.”

“You want them to stay alive?” I caught his gaze when it shot to the rearview mirror.

“Yeah.”

“Great, then shut the fuck up.” I grabbed a water bottle from the cooler and downed a few pain pills in an effort to push my headache back. I held a hand over my eyes as I looked up at the sun. It tried hard to break through the tinted windows of the SUV. The time on my watch further pissed me off. The shipment was late by forty minutes. I pulled some cash from the payment stack. Every minute came with a cost.

“Ah, boss?” I forced back my urge to lash at him. “Chili is here.”

What? He wasn’t supposed to show up for another few days to get the girls from me. I was supposed to get them checked over and make sure they are in good health physically before they were sold off. I tossed my water, grabbed my sunglasses, and opened the door.

“Stay here,” I ordered before I stepped out into the heat. I nodded at Alejandro, who drove a second truck in case something happened to the other. One could never be too cautious.

The window lowered on Chili’s Escalade, and he gave me a nod to approach.

“Thought you might like to know your new driver made a few calls before you left.” He spoke quietly.

The fuck. I was going to kill Filippo.

“Oh, really?”

“Seems he was looking for a buyer for two of the girls. Thought I’d pay you a visit personally to make sure we still had our deal in place.”

“Hmm.” I rubbed my jaw and tried to control my temper. “Of course, we do.”

“Should I be concerned?” He half closed his eyes as he studied me, and I tried not to show my frustrations with Filippo trying to go over my head to make a deal.

“No, you shouldn’t be.” I licked my dry mouth. “I appreciate the heads up.”

“Buyers talk.” He studied me again. “I decided I’ll transport these girls myself.”

“Understood.” I nodded. I wasn’t about to mess shit up because my newbie decided to step around me. I’d deal with him later.

“Boss!” Alejandro called and pointed to the tunnel. “They’re here.” I nodded, and Chili and I watched the girls emerge from the darkness. Their faces were covered by cloth bags, arms bound with rope, with a foot-and-a-half-length of rope between their feet. I noticed right away they were still wearing their shoes and had water bottles hanging from their waists. Damn, these women must be top notch to get that kind of treatment.

“Should we inspect them?” Chili asked, but I shook my head.
