“Ty, have you thought of approaching any of the men who came home with you? Any who might have had encounters with Hill before?”

“I’ve made some calls, but the usual response is a click on the end of the line.”

“In person is best.” Cole pressed his lips together as he thought. “Maybe after you speak to that bartender, you should see if you can round up some of the men, approach them head-on.”

“Wouldn’t hurt.” I nodded.

“We also both know someone who’s good at worming their way into people’s heads.” He moved his gaze from mine to Ivy’s door.

“I thought of that, but isn’t it risky for her to leave Shadows?” I felt uneasy about the idea.

“You’re right, but if you did it in Washington, Frank’s there. Eagle Eye is stationed there, too, so you’d have backup if needed. Should be safe. Plus, she’s going there soon anyway, so if we’re not on a mission, maybe you could take the time. Besides, it could work out better for me. I’d prefer not to send one of my Dusk guys to Washington to watch over Ivy. I’ve pulled them enough as it is. She’s more comfortable with you, anyway.”

“Yeah, of course. I really appreciate the suggestion.”

“Any time.” We both looked up as Doc stepped out of Ivy’s office then disappeared into his own behind us without a word. I threw Cole a look.

“I know I’m not supposed to ask, but is everything okay?”

“I’m thinking not.”

“Cole?" Savannah appeared at the end of the hall and gave me a wave, but her smile didn’t reach her eyes. “I need to speak with you.”

“Sure, be there in a sec.”

“No,” she took a step closer, “I need you now.”

Something passed between them, and he hurried off to follow her into his office. I hoped everything was all right with Olivia at camp.

Ivy

“I can’t believe you right now!” I tried to contain my anger. I caught my reflection in the window and ran my fingers through my hair and absently caught it up in a clip. I looked worn out and frazzled. It was near two a.m. in Montana, and Bronson Fitzpatrick was the last person I thought I’d be having a conversation with at any time, let alone the wee hours of the morning in my office.

“Hey, come on, hun, like you wouldn’t have stopped and heard them out if they brought up my name?”

“Yes, Bronson, I would have, but the moment they started asking personal questions about you, I would have walked away not listened and not given out details about you and your family.”

“I guess that’s where we’re different.” He sighed, and I closed my eyes, taking a moment to gather myself. “I would never intentionally hurt you, Ivy.” His voice pleaded for forgiveness.

“I know,” I nodded like he could see me, “just tell me exactly what you said so I can get ahead of the storm.”

“I was coming back from the gym,” he started. “Two men approached me in front of that little bakery. You know the one you and I used to go to.”

“I remember it.” I rolled my eyes at his obvious attempt to remind me of our past. “Did they say who they were? The press?”

“No. They weren’t with the press. They said they’d been hired by someone.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know. I’m on my way home from visiting a friend. The information’s at my office. I have it written down.” He sounded frustrated with my questions, but I also got the feeling he wanted me to ask who the friend was.

“Just tell me what you told them, Bronson.”

“They wanted to know where you’re staying.” He paused. “Where are you staying? Because I know you’re not at your place.”

“Are you checking up on me?”

“I’m worried about you, Ivy.”
