“I’m fine. I’m staying at a friend’s place.”

“And which friend is that?”

“You don’t get to ask me those questions anymore.” I wanted to lash out at him again but thought better of it and swallowed hard. “I’m proud of the way things ended with us, Bronson. Let’s keep it that way.”

“I believe you wanted to end things more than I did, Ivy,” he huffed.

“We weren’t a good match, and you know it. Don’t make things up that weren’t there.” I clenched my teeth. I didn’t want him to put me off track. “Then what happened?”

“They wanted to know if I was in contact with you. Of course, I said no, but I don’t think they believed me. They asked me about your clients, too. One of them even asked if I knew if any of them were more than just clients.”

“What the hell does that mean?”

“I don’t know. You tell me,” he shot back, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

“Surely, you’re not questioning my professionalism?” I felt like I barely knew this man anymore.

“Look, I don’t know what the hell happened with you, but did you screw one of your clients?”

“Did you seriously just ask me that?”

“I did.”

“No, Bronson, of course I didn’t. But thanks for the confidence…or lack of it.” Unbelievable.

“When are you back in the city?” He changed topics, and I fought to keep up as my mind spun.

“I don’t know. I’ve got a lot going on here.”

“I want to see you.”

“Why?” Up until now, we had been fine not being in each other’s lives anymore.

“Do I really need a reason to want to see the woman I almost married?”

“Look, we’ve had no contact in a long while, and I think it’s best we stay away from each other.”

“And your reasoning for that is…?”

“Because we’re not who we once were, and I don’t want you getting hurt.” I meant that. Bronson was a good guy, just not good for me. “I have to go. Thanks for letting me know about this, and if you’d get those names to me, I’d really appreciate it.”

“Yeah.” He obviously wasn’t happy. “Bye.” He hung up, and I tossed my phone on the table behind the couch.

I covered my face with my hands and let out a strangled scream into a handy cushion. How did I get here?

“I thought I heard you in here.” Ty made me jump with a yelp.

“Lord, you scared me.” I pressed the cushion hard against my beating heart. “How was your trip?”

“Shitty. I’d ask how your day went, but I can see it wasn’t great either.”

“Shitty, too.” I nodded and unclipped my hair and ran my hands through it to ease the anger. I caught his hungry expression and suddenly felt the mood in the room shift. Clearly, we both needed a release.

In two strides, he pulled me into him and slammed his lips to mine. I met him with equal enthusiasm, running my hands up his chest, shoulders, neck, and into his hair.

He reached down and flung the cushion I held toward the couch then tugged my skirt up over my hips and sat me on a long table against the wall. He stood between my legs and undid my blouse as I undid his belt, button, and zipper, all in a matter of seconds. I freed him then gripped him and pumped a little to drive him wild.

He bent down and kissed my breast then nipped at my nipple through my lacy bra. I pulled his head so he could do the same to the other. Once he was finished, he stood, wrapped an arm around my waist, and tugged me toward the end of the table with such force it told me he’d taken control. With hooded eyes, he massaged my lower back while his free hand pumped his shaft, and signs of his arousal appeared at the tip. It was incredibly sexy to watch his thumb coat the head then nudge it between my legs. We both watched as he slowly slipped himself inside me while my walls stretched to take all of him in.
