“Who touched you?”

“The one with the scar on his neck.” Her eyes finally met mine, and I knew exactly who she referred to.

“I’ll deal with him.”

“Good.” She raised her chin at that then winced.

“Let’s get you something for that.” I looked over her head out the window as I heard engines approach. “Fuck, it’s Castillo’s men.” I watched as they drove up the driveway, then Alejandro opened the door.

“Boss?”

“I know. Take her down and lock her back up.”

As the guys came inside, Alejandro took Lexi by the arm and headed for the stairs. I pulled out my phone and called Castillo.

“Did you find her?” he barked into the phone as I marched up to the cameras.

“I did,” I bit out knowing full well he’d been watching me.

“Good, now—”

I cut him off. “No.” I didn’t even care that I might be about to seal my own death. “You got me involved in this, so let me do it.”

“Fine,” he snarled.

“And no more fucking cameras.” I tossed my phone aside as, one by one, I tore his cameras from the wall to destroy their live feed. For years, I’d been his puppet and cleaned up his reckless mistakes, but not this time. I was finished.

Ivy

Shadows was pretty much the size of a small resort, and when the children were there it was filled with life and laughter and gave you a warm and cozy feeling. But now it felt cold and quiet since they’d moved the children out to keep them safe. The fact that the Blackstone Team was away as well made for an almost eerie silence. Understandably, the wives were worried, and although they all tried their best to act normal, it was a challenge and one they’d never faced before.

I did my best to offer comfort and someone to talk to, but I understood. This was a much bigger situation than they’d ever had to deal with since Shadows was formed. Just the idea that someone could expose the location of the safehouse was a threat to everyone here. I wished I could help more.

At least I had cranky old Scoot to talk to. I had to laugh. He never seemed to alter his shameless way of sitting. Sometimes he’d sit in the crack of the couch cushion, flop his legs wide open, and stare at me as if to say, “Look at how fabulous my manhood is.” If anything, at least he gave me a good chuckle.

“Ivy?” Sloane knocked softy on my office door and gave me a nervous look. “May we come in?”

We?

“Sure.” I expected to see Savannah behind her, so the fact that it was Frank had me on my feet. “I’m going to guess this isn’t a girls’ night invite?” I desperately wished it was.

“No,” she shook her head, “and I’m sorry, but this does require us to shut the door.”

“Okay.” I stepped around my desk and held on to the side of it for support.

“I’m just going to cut right to the—”

“Frank,” Sloane shot him a glare and shook her head, “perhaps a little softer might be wiser?” He blinked at her and then seemed to think about how he had come across.

“Right, sorry.” He turned to me again. “Ivy, last night, Ben Oliver was in your mother’s house when she got back from the market.”

“She’s okay, though,” Sloane jumped in and put her hand on my arm as I felt my knees begin to shake. “She’s just rattled.”

A sudden ringing in my ears made it hard to make out their words.

“He had already broken into her house and had gone through her things,” Frank went on, knowing I’d want all the details. “We know he saw the fake letters from you because they’d been thrown back in the drawer. That’s a positive because there’s no reason to believe he won’t believe what he read.” A cold wash came over me at the thought of my mom’s fear. “Apparently, he waited for her and grabbed her as she came inside. He held a knife to her throat and forced her to tell him where you were.” He held up both hands to reassure me again. “You can rest assured she’s perfectly fine.”

“Did-did—” Mom didn’t know where I was, so I hoped she gave the cover story, so he didn’t hurt her.
