“Two coffees, one with cream and one black, please.” I smiled at the young kid behind the counter.

“Make that three coffees,” Ty said over my head, and butterflies found my stomach as his hand slid around my waist. “One cream and two black.”

“Ty!” I stepped back to check him over. “How—when did you get in?”

“I got the call from Frank that you needed to go, so when we made our first stop,” he looked around and skipped over the details, “I flew here to meet up with you.”

“You’re coming with us?”

“I told you I didn’t want you to go without me.” He pretended to look mad.

I couldn’t help but smile, then stole a glance at Frank, who still had his back to us, so I quickly leaned in and kissed him. His arm hooked around me and locked me in place to extend the kiss a little longer.

“You have no idea how much I needed that,” he murmured across my lips with a heavy sigh. “I saw your handiwork on the chopper.” I grinned. “It made me feel like you were with me.”

“Good.” I gave him another quick kiss and wished I had all of him. “How was it?” I whispered, unsure if he was ready to talk about it.

“Eventful.” He closed his eyes. “Not at all what we were hoping for. Fingers crossed the informants will come up with something else fast.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Me too.” He slowly let me go when our coffees were ready. “How’s your mom?”

“She’s okay.” I shrugged. “I just need to see her.”

“Fair enough.” He took Frank’s coffee and handed it to him. Frank held it up in a silent thanks but didn’t hang up.

“He’s been on that phone for ages. Any idea who he could be talking to for so long?” I asked out of sheer curiosity when Frank once again turned his back to us.

“My guess would be to any or all of his contacts with a connection to Mexico.”

“Mom,” I shouted and ran into her arms like I was six again, “are you okay?” I studied her carefully. I knew she was physically fine, but it was the mental and emotional cancer that people often missed. It was why I took my job so seriously.

“I’m much better now.” She patted my back, and I breathed in the perfume that always made me feel loved.

“I’m sorry my problems found you.” Tears filled my eyes, and I blinked them away.

“Sweetheart,” she pushed my shoulders back and looked at me straight in the eye, “what do I always tell you about that word?” I smiled as she swiped a Kleenex across my cheeks. “Never be sorry for something that’s out of your control.”

“I know.” I took her hands and relished being close to her again. My mother grounded me and reminded me she was all I needed in a parent.

“Sweetheart, I need to tell you something.”

“Okay.”

“Bronson came by.”

“Why?”

“He wants you back.” She shrugged, as she knew that would never happen. “Said he loves you.”

“Bronson loves what’s in front of him in a given moment. We spoke on the phone a few times, and now he wants to get back together.” I rolled my eyes. “He’ll get over it once Corinne from his office is finished with her fling of the month.”

“Maybe you should see him and remind him why the two of—” She looked over my shoulder and then back to me. “And who might this be?”

“Mom,” I stepped back as Ty approached, “this is Major Beckett.” I sniffed. “Ty, this is my mother, Clara.”

“Lovely to meet you, ma’am.” He glanced at me. “Are you good?” I nodded.
