Finally, a name I recognized in the conversation.

“Vinni’s good to go?”

“Yeah, he’ll be in touch soon. Something will come up. I’ll make sure of it.” Trigger glanced at Morgan, who suddenly looked stressed at a call coming in then declined it. He caught Trigger’s gaze and gave a tight nod before the two of them focused on me again. I couldn’t help but wonder how dark their world actually ran. “So, you’re the new team leader?”

“I am.” I nodded.

“What’s your team name?” I thought for a moment, as I hadn’t shared it with the others yet. I wasn’t sure I wanted now to be the time.

“Dark Water.” I felt Moore look at me. I didn’t need to explain my reasoning for it; he already knew. A team name had to mean something important. Dark water had saved our lives on countless occasions. If I was going to lead a team into a new kind of war, we were going to fight under that memory.

“Dark Water,” he repeated. “Why that name?”

“Why Trigger?” I challenged, feeling raw on something as intimate as that name.

“Hm.” He nodded while he thought. “Okay…” He waited a beat, and I thought he wanted me to say my name.

“Ty Beckett.”

“I know who you are.” He rubbed his lip.

“And you’re the president of your club.”

“I am.” Mike glanced at Cole, but I didn’t break my gaze with Trigger. “You think you know me?” He stroked his beard.

“About as much as you know me.”

Brick shook his head, and Morgan cleared his throat. All the while, Trigger and I stared at each other. His green eyes pierced through me. I was sure most would back down, but he was no match for my past. I’d stared down the barrel of a sawed-off shotgun held by a Taliban leader.

“Fuckin’ good choice, Logan.” Trigger looked at him.

“I know.” Cole nodded, and I felt the tension ease at the table.

“The fuck?” Mike read something off his phone. “Holy shit, Trig. Guess who else Castillo has at his place.”

“Who?” Cole leaned over.

“Rosa Coppola.”

Trigger leaned over and whispered to Morgan. I took that opportunity to lean over to Cole and lowered my voice.

“How is it these guys got here so fast?”

“They knew ahead,” he reassured me. “I told Mike to give this address to Morgan’s cousin. Trigger knew where to meet once he got word. Mike knew they were on their way. We just didn’t let Frank know.” I had to remind myself that I wasn’t in control right now. This was Cole’s world. It was hard, but I also knew I had a lot to learn. I appreciated that Cole explained things. He could have just eyed me to back off and not question him.

Trigger signaled something to Brick, who immediately shot up from his chair and left the table with his phone in his hand.

“Rail, call the VPs. Get the word out we need eyes in the northwest of Mexico.” Trigger’s men didn’t miss a beat taking orders. I respected that. “Keith, I’ll make some calls, man. See who else we can use. We’re on it. Give me at most a day, and I’ll check back in.”

“Thanks.” Keith nodded.

“We need whatever happens to play in our favor,” Cole explained. “We have one chance to make our move, or she’s gone.” Keith’s gaze dropped to the table hard.

“I get that.” Trigger seemed genuine.

“Morgan, how is everything going?” Mike said cryptically across the table. I noticed Morgan rubbed his beard for a moment as he contemplated his answer.

“It’s all good.” He grinned, but everyone in the room could see the heaviness that rested behind his words.
