“What?” How did we not know this?

“When I got home, I did some digging. I’ve got a friend down at the police station, and he said that the Browns were advised to file a report based on some evidence that was found.”

“I’m pretty sure there wasn’t any.”

“Yeah, he said there wasn’t, but what that does is put the spotlight on Hill and Rivera. Now they need to watch their backs for the next while.”

“This is crazy. I can’t believe you got so much information. I more than owe you drinks!”

“Yeah, you do. Dinner, drinks, and chocolate.” She laughed as I opened the door to find Ty about to knock. “If I hear anything else, I’ll call you.”

“Thanks.” I spotted Cole in the entryway as Savannah came in from outside. Before she could get her coat off, he wrapped her in a hug and tucked her head under his chin.

“I love you,” he sighed, and she nuzzled in without asking what was going on. It was like she just knew.

“Not as much as I love you.”

I held my phone to my heart as I watched the love that surrounded the two of them. They really were meant for each other.

“Hey.” Ty came into view then looked at me funny. He followed my line of sight then smiled at me. “Did you have a part in that?”

“No,” I felt warmth spread through me, “that’s all Cole.”

“So, ah, do you have an appointment, or can we talk?”

“Not at the moment.” I stepped back inside my office. “I was actually on my way to come find you.”

We both spoke at the same time. “I’ve something to tell you.”

“You go first.” He leaned against my desk and watched me as I plugged my phone into the power cord.

“Does the name Jack Lever mean anything to you?”

“Yeah, Jack joined the same year I did, but he only made it two years before he was—” He stopped himself. “Seriously?”

“Looks that way. I did a little digging on Hill.” I saw his eyebrows pinch. “Thanks to my friend Michelle. Seems Hill’s spiraling. I think it’s because he can’t find you, so he’s in a panic.” I spent the next ten minutes filling him in, and he just stared at the floor and listened. “Ty, they’re getting closer to taking this guy down.”

“I wonder how many others there are.” I watched his face twist as he fought an internal battle. I figured he must be trying to let it all sink in. I couldn’t imagine finding out that one of your fellow soldiers was killing off your own just because they could. The fact that there wasn’t law and order in Afghanistan didn’t make it okay. It was so backward and so wrong. They were supposedly there fighting as a unit for peace, not to kill off the very people who had their backs.

“I don’t know. Hard to say, but I’ve got Michelle keeping her ear to the ground. She’s got a friend who’s helped her at the police station, and I’m thinking we should go visit him and then maybe Dustin. A little pressure, and maybe he’ll talk.” I tucked my hair behind my ear and snagged my empty coffee cup from my desk. “Sloane said the courts make deals all the time, so maybe we can get Dustin off if he talks. I really think Hill’s time is coming to an end, Ty. We’re close to something. I can feel it.”

“Ivy,” he took my hand, and I let myself tune into his mood, “we need to talk.”

“That’s never a good start.” I tried to make light of the nerves that had a sudden grip on my stomach.

“Frank has offered me an opportunity to go back to Afghanistan.” He saw my expression change and quickly added, “Just for forty-eight hours, to collect any kind of proof I can get against Hill.”

“What?” His words echoed in my head.

“And I’m going.”

Wow. “But, Ty, since you left there, that town’s become infested with Taliban.” I pulled out of his hold and took a step back while my body absorbed the shock.

“It has,” he said calmly, “but I’ve spent years fighting the Taliban. I know how they work. They don’t scare me.”

“But they do scare me,” I blurted and tried to shake the panic from my head. “But we’ve got so much more information to go on now. I mean, what do you think you’re going to find there that could possibly help?”

“I don’t know,” he tilted his head, “but I need to try.”
