“Shit.” I felt the blood drain from my face.

“I have something else for ya.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah, I’m sending you a photo now.”

I pulled my phone back out when I felt it come through. It was of Martin Castillo’s house in flames, and in the background by a tree, I could make out a Devil’s Reach vest.

“You can thank me later.” The line went dead, and I sank into a chair wondering how I was going to navigate this one. Was Trigger behind Castillo’s death?

Kenna

My head swam after my conversation with Simon. I hoped like hell that Trigger knew what he was doing.

“This is impressive.” Salazar looked around the grand room and admired the red, silver, and black décor. It screamed Gates Family like nothing else. “I’ll be sure to make a sizable donation.”

“That’s very kind of you.” I sipped my champagne and tried to focus on the party. “So, you’re leaving?”

“Yes, I must get back to handle some business. I won’t lie, I’ll miss your company.”

“You know where to find me,” I assured him.

“I do.” He spotted Yen Hong the same time I did. “That’s my cue to go write a check. I’ll see you when I’m back in town.”

“I’m looking forward to it.” I gave him a handshake, and he slipped into the crowd.

“Well, well, look at you.” Yen took my hand and spun me around. “Kenna, you must break hearts everywhere you go.”

“Only when I’m standing next to you.” I waved a hand at his jacket. “What is this, Sebastian Cruz?” He beamed, pleased I knew his designer.

“It is. You certainly know your fashion.”

“But of course.” I caught my own reflection in a window. I was so pleased with my dress. It was a blood red silk gown, and the skirt had been cut into seven panels, which created such elegance when I moved. There were seven slits, one at each seam that went straight up and connected with the lace halter-top bodice. It was sexy and gorgeous all at once. Of course, Minnie was the one who found the dress for me and insisted I wore it.

I’d kept my dark hair in long waves, so it tumbled down my bare back. My eye makeup was very dramatic to match the mood the Gates had gone for. Much like Grim’s penthouse, the décor at the ball was done in a sort of chic-goth theme.

“Oh my God, you wore it,” Minnie cooed as she swept me up in a hug. She looked equally as sexy in her silver pin-up outfit. She stepped back to admire me. “He’s going to lose his shit.”

“Who?” Yen stepped closer, loving the drama Minnie was dying to spill.

“No one.” I laughed and shot her a look. I tried hard to keep my private life away from my clients. Even if Yen was different, I had boundaries.

“As long as it’s not Grim, Leo, or Knox, I approve.” He chuckled, and Minnie gave him a strange expression. “I just mean because I offered Kenna a job in Hong Kong, and if the Gates get a tight hold on her, she’ll never leave.”

“Oh, really?” Minnie’s eyes were in slits as she studied me.

“I haven’t made any firm decisions. I’ve only been full time in Vegas for just over a year. Things are still new.”

“Yes, well, I wasn’t kidding about what I said about the contract. You write whatever you want in there, and I’ll make it happen.” He leaned in and kissed my cheek. “Have a great time and go flash that dress around.” He left, and Minnie shook her head.

“Look at you, Miss Popular. Remember, though, you can’t leave us. You know I can hide bodies, so they’ll never be found. So don’t do me no wrong.”

“Ha! You’re funny.” I gave her a wry look. “His offer was kind, and one I would have considered a year ago, but I really love this city and all of you, threats or no threats, so don’t worry.”

“Okay.” She huffed, then looked thoughtful. “Although a backup job far away might be good if you needed to hide. Wouldn’t be a bad thing.” She eyed me.

“Trust me, that thought passed through my mind already.” I waved at my mother who had just spotted me.
