I followed Kenna and stood behind her as she hit the down button for the elevator. Neither of us spoke. I took the opportunity to eye her outfit as she stared at the stainless steel door. Her skintight black dress and sparkly heels looked elegant with her dark hair pinned up on one side. Spicy perfume smothered my senses, and I found myself drawing it in to savor it. It was a heavier scent than her daytime perfume. It reminded me of the next morning after a hot night of sex.

“Fuck.” I shook the thought right out of my head, but when I opened my eyes, I found she’d turned and was watching me. “What?”

“He has a temper, but he means well.” She seemed to struggle with her words like she wanted to believe them herself.

“Does he often come at you like that?”

“He’s all bark, no bite.” She waved me off, but there was a sense of sadness behind her words.

“Why don’t you call him Dad?” I took the opportunity, as I’d often wondered about it.

“Because he’s not my dad.” She closed her eyes for a second. “I mean, he was, but he’s not anymore.” I eyed her, confused. “Let’s just say he was kind of there when I was younger, but as I matured,” she pointed to her breasts, “his clients paid more attention to me than him. He changed. I soon became an asset and then a full-time employee. I guess the daughter part kind of dissolved with me anyway. My little sister fills the gap, plays up to Daddy in all the ways I refuse to.”

“That’s fucked up.”

“I don’t want your pity.” She stiffened.

“I wasn’t giving it to you,” I shot back as we stepped between the doors.

“Do you have any idea who this Castillo guy is?”

“No one you need to concern yourself with.”

“I beg to differ.”

“Nice to know you beg.” I smirked trying to get under her skin. I enjoyed it.

“You really haven’t changed, have you?” We locked eyes as we silently glared at each other. She thought I was a pig, and I was too proud to give her an inch. I didn’t owe her anything.

Then I remembered what Minnie told me.

“You’re working tonight?” I eyed her open cleavage.

“Yes.” She pulled out her lipstick and mirror.

“Cancel it.”

“Pardon me?” Her face twisted. “Who are you to tell me what I can and cannot do?”

“I’m your boss.” I turned to face her as I pulled out my phone and sent off a quick text. “I make the rules.”

“It’s a client dinner.” She looked confused. “I’m doing my job.”

“It’s not a request, Kenna. Cancel it.” The doors opened, and I stepped out on the floor above the lobby.

My phone rang, and I held it to my ear as the doors closed behind me.

“Mr. Gates, are you sure?”

“Do it.”

Kenna

I kissed my middle finger then held it straight up in his direction as the doors closed.

“Such an asshole,” I muttered but stared at the number that was stuck on level two. I used my keycard and hit the button for the lobby again, but nothing happened.

“Seriously?” I yanked open the emergency phone and waited for Gavin to pick up.
