“Hi, Miss Lodge.” He cleared his throat in an odd way. “How can I help you?”

“Gavin, the elevator is stuck.”

“Is it?”

“Yes.” I looked up at the camera. “Any chance you can unstick it?”

“That will take some time.”

“This is a Gates hotel.” I chuckled. “Things like this aren’t supposed to happen.”

There was a pause, and I heard him cover the phone mic.

“Don’t worry, I’m doing everything I can to get you out of there.”

“Thanks.” I sighed and looked at the time. I was already late. “Any idea what happened?”

“Ah, not sure.” I heard some buttons click, and I leaned against the cool wall and listened as he worked away.

“How are your kids?” I figured I should make small talk since he was just listening to me breathe.

“Big and bad,” he laughed, “but they’re good.”

“Summer’s here. You should take them to the pool. Beat the heat here when you can.”

“I’m not so sure they’ll be as welcome this year.”

“Why?” Jim Gates always seemed pretty cool about the staff bringing their family by to enjoy the pool.

“The new boss likes to run a tighter ship.” He referred to Grim, and I rolled my eyes at the camera, making him chuckle again. “I don’t need to piss him off, and neither do you.”

“Asshole behavior brings out asshole behavior, I guess.”

“You’ve got some balls, girl.”

“Mm.” I checked the time again, and something suddenly hit me as his words repeated in my head. I don’t need to piss him off, and neither do you. “Gavin,” I drew out his name.

“Come on, Kenna, don’t ask me.” He caved like a house of cards.

“Son of a bitch.” I closed my eyes and wanted to scream.

“Orders are orders.”

“I know.” I would never ask him to go against his boss. He had a family to provide for. Then I remembered something. “I gotta go.” I knew the camera recorded everything, so Gavin wouldn’t get in trouble. I opened my purse and plucked out the pretty little black master keycard and tapped it to the pad. Like magic, the door opened.

“Ha!” I was positively gleeful.

I flew out of the steel cage and ran straight into Rail. I didn’t have to see his face; the smell of weed, leather, and bleach told me it was him. Well, that and the words that flew out of his mouth.

“Fine, if you want me to grab your boobs, just ask.” He steadied me on my feet and smirked down at me. “Hey, doll.”

“Have you seen Grim?”

“If I did?” He pointed to his cheek, and I rolled my eyes and gave him a quick kiss. Rail was my weakness. He was crude, crazy, and completely unpredictable. I was only one of those things, so I lived vicariously through him.

“Sorry. It’s been a day, and I’m insanely late for a business dinner.”

“He left saying just about the same thing, like twenty minutes ago.”
