“With Sonny.” His tone was so chilly that I swallowed back a shiver. “You disobeyed me. You knew I didn’t want you to have any contact with him again. The next thing I heard, you made a deal not only for him but for his fucking father too.” He slammed a fist on the table, and I jumped. Knox looked concerned while Calli just stared.

My own anger flared. Deep breaths, Kenna.

“Listen, Grim,” I stepped close to him and looked into his eyes, “I worked on getting Sonny to sign on for nearly five months. Under both of our fathers’ orders. Just because you’re back and everyone is terrified to piss off the great Grim Reaper doesn’t mean you can come in and change things. You know working with clients takes time and effort. A lot of it. So, all my hard work with Sonny can’t just be dropped. It isn’t that easy.”

“Yes, it is.”

“Besides, you don’t know shit about what happened!” My voice rose, and Knox’s mouth flew open. I blinked. Had I gone too far?

“See why I’m Dad’s favorite.” Calli stabbed her cherry with her straw, and I glared at her.

“No, you’re Dad’s favorite because you lack a backbone to be anything but his yes bitch.”

“Raise your hand if you have a degree here.” She pushed her fake glasses up her nose and made a face.

“Hey,” Grim pulled my attention back to him, “explain it. What the hell happened then?”

“Look, Grim.” I took a deep breath. “I didn’t come here to get yelled at on my night off.” I raised my hands. “I came here to relax and have a bit of fun. Can’t we talk about this in the morning?”

“Kenna, come dance!” Rail grinned at me, but when he looked at Grim’s furious face, he read the vibe. “You’ve had a day.” He pushed a chair toward Grim. “I’m buying you a lap dance.” He snapped his fingers, and a girl in a skimpy bikini came over.

“Yes, that’s a good idea.” Knox pushed his brother into the chair, and the girl dropped down and started to grind around on his lap. He totally ignored her and kept his angry gaze fixed on me.

“Wow, someone was ready for me.” She beamed and pointed down at his erection. “I must be good at my job.”

“It wasn’t you,” he grunted, and I felt a tight pull in the bottom of my stomach.

“Excuse me, any chance you’d be up for another dance?” The guy I’d dirty danced with earlier held out a hand.

“No,” Grim flicked his wrist, dismissing him, “she’s busy.”

“Actually,” I scowled at him, “I’d love to.” I took the guy’s hand and started to leave.

Jesse stood in our path, and I turned to Grim, outraged.

We were obviously at an impasse. Play the game, Kenna.

“Perhaps another time.” I let go of the guy’s hand and waved at him to carry on with his night. He showed regret in his expression, but a glance at Grim and he knew better than to push it.

“Hey,” I gently pulled the girl off Grim as I reached into his coat pocket for his wallet. I was shocked he let me. “Take this.” I peeled a hundred off his thick wad of bills. “Consider it a well-earned tip.”

“Thanks, doll!” She grinned and moved on to the next table.

I held out his wallet, and when he went to reach for it, I pulled it back and he pushed himself forward toward me. His broad, muscular chest made me want to put my hand on it. I forced myself to put both my hands on the arms of his chair, then I leaned forward and pressed the girls hard against him and stared straight into his eyes. I moved my lips close to his ear.

“You want to be a dick tonight, fine, but you don’t own me. And it’s high time you learn I’m just as stubborn as you are.” I dragged my tongue along his neck and flicked his earlobe. With that, I tucked his wallet back in his pocket and stood. He snagged my wrist.

“You’ll learn to take orders from me,” he growled inches from my face.

“I think you and I know that will never happen.” I ripped my wrist from his hold then snatched his drink off the table and took it with me as I disappeared into the crowd to look for Dale.

I couldn’t relax because of Jesse’s presence. I knew he felt bad, but Grim was his boss, and he had orders. I knew he didn’t have the liberty I had to disobey.

“Hey.” A man moved between Dale and me. I attempted to step around him, but Jesse removed him before I could speak.

“Sorry, Kenna.” Jesse made a wry face. “You pissed him off big time tonight. Why can’t you just tell him what happened?”

“Would he listen even if I tried?”
