“Grim, please.” I looked around at the people. I didn’t want anyone to see us arguing, but he kept his gaze on me. “Let it go.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because…” He stopped himself and glared like he wasn’t comfortable with his first thought. “Because I think you’re reckless and you’ll end up dead somewhere.”

Wow.

“Well, I’ll tell ya what.” I stepped back with a shrug. “I’ll spare you the media attention and promise I won’t end up dead here.”

“Kenna,” he snarled, “get back here.”

“Goodnight, Mr. Gates.” I turned on my heel but wavered in my step when I saw Jayden watching us. I didn’t have the headspace to deal with him. It was just my luck as soon as I headed across the lobby, he intercepted me.

“Mr. Hong was looking for you tonight.”

When will these people ever realize I know where my clients are at all times? I’d know when and if they ever needed anything.

“Mr. Hong has been settled in his room. I escorted him to and from dinner, and he knew I was off tonight. I also didn’t get any calls from him or any of my other clients, so I think you may have me confused with someone else.” I side-stepped him and kept walking, but he stayed with me.

“Kenna…” He kept his voice even, but I knew he wanted to push. This was not a time to try to cross a line I wasn’t going to cross, especially when we were in front of other clients and guests. “Where were you tonight?”

“Out.”

“I can see that, but where?”

“Jayden,” I quickly lowered my voice when I saw some guests look over at us, “I don’t have to tell you where I’ve been.”

“Were you out with Mr. Gates again?”

“Excuse me?” I punched the button on the elevator. I couldn’t believe he felt he had the right to pry. I knew he liked me and wanted to be more than just a friend, but that wasn’t going to happen, not now, not ever.

“Kenna,” he softened his voice as he often did when he wanted me to hear him out, “you know your father wouldn’t approve of you fooling around with your boss. Besides, he’s been seeing that Jenelle girl.”

“What the hell did you just say to me?”

“Please,” he gave a pointed look to remind me we weren’t alone, “actions have consequences, Kenna. Be smart about yours,” he scolded then walked away. The nerve!

Years ago, I’d made the mistake of having dinner with Jayden, and he thought that meant we were more than friends. Though I’d let him down easily, he avoided me for days. When he finally spoke to me, he said I deserved the world and that he wanted to make sure I got it. Jayden said that because my father and his were good friends, he’d made it his duty to watch over me. He explained it was the least he could do, considering the type of clients I often had to deal with. It was sweet, but I told him many times it wasn’t necessary. He never listened, and sometimes he made me almost angry with his attempts at “big brothering” me.

I stepped into the elevator, and as the doors closed, I caught Grim’s pissed off look from where he stood. He had a couple women on his arm. That didn’t take long.

I huffed and called Hanna again, but it went straight to voice message.

“Hey, love, sorry for the phone tag. Call me tomorrow my time if you’re free. I’m about to knock out cold.” I sagged into the wall and watched the numbers climb.

Simon

“Coffee?” The waitress asked as I stared across the hotel lobby.

“Yes, please.” I leaned back so she could pour.

“Anything else?

“No, thank you.” I briefly smiled up at her then returned my gaze to Kenna, who looked to be avoiding Walter’s son, Jayden Wallace.

I knew why. I overheard them the other night as they argued by the elevator. It hadn’t taken long once I arrived here to realize Jayden watched out for her, but I also saw him as a spoiled little gym rat who loved to throw around that his and Cameron’s family were longtime friends. Walter and Cameron went way back, and Cameron was the one who had gotten Walter the job at Indulge overseeing the super hostesses. Once Jayden was old enough, Walter moved him in as a manager. Jayden never let anyone forget his title.
