“I actually felt bad for Rich. His wife needs major lessons. Okay, I’ll be in touch.” He left me alone, but the door didn’t close, and I looked up and saw my mother come in.

“Everything okay, Grimson?”

“No.” I let out a long sigh. I knew it was pointless to lie to the one person who knew me the best. “But I’ll get through it.”

“Of course, you will. You’re my son.” She moved over to her desk and picked up a photo of her and Dad in Egypt. “Kenna sure gets under your skin.” She chuckled, amused.

“If it was up to me, I’d fire her ass.”

“Why? Because she won’t take your shit?”

“Because she doesn’t take orders at all.”

“Reminds me of someone else I know.” She eyed me.

“She’s reckless, mouthy, defies me at every corner.”

“Beautiful too.”

“Looks don’t mean she’s a good employee.” I was smarter than to pull at that thread. I knew my mother would love nothing more than for me to meet someone and start a family.

“Son, she’s not only beautiful but a force to be reckoned with.”

“Maybe.” I heard a door slam and saw Simon appear in the hallway. Mom spotted him, too. “Seriously, Mom, this deal with Sonny isn’t sitting right. It never has. Sonny’s dangerous, and the shit with the drug was done right in front of me. Like he thought I’d be all right with it.”

“Maybe it was a test?”

“And if it was?” I shook my head, frustrated. “I know how people view the Devil’s Reach or the Capri family or whatever crime family we deal with, but they aren’t like the Contis. They’re a whole different breed.”

“I know.” She placed the picture down and ran a finger across the frame. “I’ll admit these people were never someone we thought we’d bring in. But they have a lot of money and are willing to spend it here.”

“So?”

“Grimson,” she lowered her head and took a deep breath, “I need you to let your dad have this one.”

“Why?”

“Your dad needs this win.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning,” she sat down next to me and threaded her hand through mine, “I’m asking you to let this one go.”

“Is there something I should know?” I held her gaze, then I glanced at Simon again, who seemed to be reading something on his phone.

“No, son, I just think your dad needs a win right now, and this is it.”

A million thoughts ran through my mind before I gave her a small nod.

“Good boy.” She squeezed my arm. “Now, will you ease up a little on Kenna?”

“No. That’s asking too much. Speaking of which,” I shook my head, “how are you guys still doing business with Cameron?”

“I know,” she shrugged, obviously exasperated, “but you know your father. Loyalty runs deep with him.”

“I get that, but he’s getting progressively worse as the years go on.”

“Why do you think I skip most of the meetings?” She chuckled lightly. “I’ve learned to tune him out. He means well and is good for the hotel, but I agree he oversteps a lot.”
